Dorothy Ilene (Speirs) Fawcett was born in Wolsey, SD on August 4, 1928, to Ralph and Edith (Leadbetter) Speirs.  She was the eighth of twelve children. Dorothy graduated from Miller High School in 1948.  She then married Leonard Fawcett on August 8, 1948.  They began their 64 years together in a homestead house on the ranch ten miles south of Ree Heights.  Leonard and Dorothy were blessed with four children: Rebecca, Sandra, Edwin and Dennis.

Dorothy enjoyed many hobbies, including years of ceramics, card making and baking treats for families and friends.  Often times, afternoon coffee breaks turned into tea time with the queen, as she so enjoyed her tea parties filled with fancy tea cups and treats.  Dorothy was an active member of the Cedar and First United Methodist Churches, Cedar Ladies Aid, and the United Methodist Women’s group. One of her greatest honors was being crowned Flying Farmer Queen and hosting several fly-ins at the ranch.  She loved to bowl with the ladies and on the couple’s teams. For more than 50 years, Dorothy spent afternoons playing bridge with the same group of ladies.  Along with her bridge ladies, her PEO Sisters were among her closest friends.

Dorothy loved to decorate for every season or holiday, both inside and outside of the house.  She also served on many committees to decorate for special occasions and events in the community.  Many of the decorations used were her own ceramic works, crafted and hand-painted by Dorothy. Now, her handmade creations are treasured by her children, grandchildren, and friends.

Grateful for having shared in Dorothy’s life are her family members including children: Rebecca (Joe) Fawcett Monroe, Great Falls, MT, Sandra (Steven) Entringer, Corsica, SD, Ed (Linda) Fawcett, Twin Brooks, SD, Dennis (Connie) Fawcett, Ree Heights, SD; grandchildren: Joe (Shenna) Monroe, Heather (Lance) Stokes, Josh Entringer, Jeff (Alicia) Entringer, Jeremiah Fawcett, Miriah (Dave) Hicks, Luke Fawcett, Beth (Greg) Palmer, and Charles (Kayla) Fawcett; great grandchildren: Gavin Ritz, Dylan (Payton), Brett, Hannah and Garett Monroe, Madalyne, Kale and Ella Stokes, Madisyn, Jackson and Hudson Entringer, Austin, Natalie and Korin Fawcett, Debrianna, Isabella, Simon and Thomas Hicks, Journey, Jolie, Aiden and Easton Palmer, and Morgan and Logan Fawcett; sister, Harriet Kopplin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was greeted at Heaven’s Gates by her husband, Leonard; parents: Ralph and Edith Speirs; siblings: DeLila (Eldon) Tompkins, Waldo (Doris) Speirs, Leonard (Loraine) Speirs, Mary Alice (Donald) Downing, Blanche (Hugh) McClellan, Florence (Kenneth) Phillips, Glen (Gladys) Speirs, Kenneth (Patrecia) Speirs, Keith (Gerri) Speirs, Willis (Audrey) Speirs, brothers-in-law: Lester Kopplin and Robert Brandhagen; grandson, Jay Fawcett; great granddaughter, Brittany Monroe; and great grandson, Carson Stokes.

  10. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I feel blessed to have grown up in Green Valley with Dorothy's example of love, caring and joy for life. I remember one Halloween Leonard and Dorothy had to be gone but that didn't stop Dorothy from decorating the walkway and her living room with a note to walk in – I remember she was disappointed many didn't feel comfortable going in when no one was home, but I told Mom Dorothy wants us to and enjoyed some witches brew and treats. She was one of our Spring Hill School Moms. Love to all of you – Marlene
