Effie C. Nelson Wickersham, 85, of Gettysburg, passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at St. Mary's Healthcare Center in Pierre.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 2, 2009 at the Luce Funeral Home in Gettysburg with Pastor Fred Shoemaker officiating. Burial followed at at Fairview Cemetery at Bismarck, ND. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Luce Funeral Home.

Effie Christine Christenson was born November 13, 1923 at the Bismarck Hospital in Bismarck, ND to Charles and Agnes (Bondeson) Christenson. She lived on a farm during her childhood and attended South Rock Hill Township Country School in Burleigh County, ND and High School in Fargo and Milton, ND graduating in 1941. Following high school Effie went on to receive her Teacher’s Certificate from the Teachers College in Minot, ND. She taught school at various country schools. She then returned to school receiving a degree from Business School. Effie went on to work as a secretary for the Bismarck Hospital for the next 27 years.

Effie married William L. Nelson in 1954 and he passed away in 1977.

On May 17, 1980 Effie married Chiles “Buck” Wickersham. While living in Gettysburg Effie ran a daycare for a short time. Buck passed away January 23, 1993.

Effie was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Tolstoy. She was an avid reader and loved to keep up with current events.

In September 2008 she entered the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg where she resided until the time of her death.

Effie is survived by her brother Erick Christenson of Regan, ND; one niece, Robyn (Jason) Coalwell of Wahpeton, ND; and eight stepchildren: Audrey Schirmer, Marlene Kearns, Lyle Wickersham, Bonnie Polich, Lila Hericks, Gary Wickersham, Pamela Ludovico and Julie Company.

She was preceded in death by both husbands: William L. Nelson and Chiles “Buck” Wickersham; one sister, Edith Christenson and one stepson, Donald Wickersham.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Effie's arrangements.
