Florence Lafferty, 89, of Eagle Butte, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Pierre, SD.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. MDT, Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte with Mother Marion Rechtenwald officiating. Burial followed in the Iron Lightning Family Cemetery at Iron Lightning. A wake service was held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the church.

Florence Iron Lightning “Maka Ali Win” was born August 31, 1919 to Grant and Molly (High Elk) Iron Lightning (both deceased) at Red Elm, SD. Florence was the oldest of ten brothers and sisters, brothers: Peter, John, Grant, Jr. “Sonny” and Dale; sisters: Amy, Caroline and Delores (all deceased) with two surviving sisters, Cordelia Iron Lightning Dupris and Veronica Iron Lightning, both of Eagle Butte; and a special daughter, Ruby (Iron Lightning) Shore.

Florence attended the Butler Public School (west of Iron Lightning), the Iron Lightning Day School, and graduated from the Old Cheyenne Agency Boarding School in about 1940.

Florence was married to Henry “Pinky” Lafferty, Sr. (deceased). From this union were born, Henry “Rocio” Lafferty, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; Gertie Lafferty of Iron Lightning; Henrietta Scott of Rapid City; Molly Lafferty (deceased); Norma Lafferty of Eagle Butte; Joe Lafferty of Iron Lightning; Harvey Lafferty of Mitchell; a very special granddaughter, Denise Marie Lafferty of Pierre; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and relatives.

Florence spent her life as a housewife, mother and grandmother. She worked intermittently with the Cheyenne River Headstart Program; the Cheyenne River Elderly and Nutrition Center and the Cheyenne River Day Care Center. Her special interests included sewing, baking, cooking, attending Pow Wows and dancing. She was a member and attended church services at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Florence was loved and cared for by many of her children, grandchildren, friends and relatives. She was affectionately known as “Slow Flo” and will be missed greatly by many.

  1. My relatives, I’m sorry I can not be there to show my respect but please know that I loved auntie very much and am happy that i got to know her a little better while taking care of her at Pierre. You will be remembered in my prayers my cousins.

  2. Strong prayers for all of her family, may you all find peace and happiness in memories of your mom. I pray for you all, my mother passed on recently also, Thank You Hank for being there for me. I know this time is difficult for everyone. Take care, and be there for each other in your future.
