Florine E. Henning, 95, of Miller, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller, surrounded by her loving family and hospice care.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller, with Pastor Robert Brooks officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the St. Lawrence Cemetery following the service.

Florine was born on March 2, 1929, in Yankton, South Dakota, to John and Ella (Haring) Bertsch. She grew up in Menno and graduated from Miller High School. Florine continued her education at Mission House College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where she met her future husband, Milton Henning. They were married on December 27, 1949. Following their marriage, Florine moved to Miller, where she lived for the remainder of her life.

Florine’s career was marked by her dedication to music and education. She worked in various businesses, gave piano and voice lessons, and served as a substitute music teacher. Her passions extended beyond the classroom; she enjoyed bowling, participating in many tournaments, dancing, golf, and was an active member of her bridge club. Florine also made significant contributions as a den mother for Cub Scouts, a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood, and a devoted 60-year member of the First Presbyterian Choir.

Her memory will be cherished by her children: Mike (Bonnie) Henning of Aberdeen, Steve (Debbie) Henning of Huron, and Cheryl Snyders of Ellis, Kansas; her grandchildren: Matt Henning, Lyndsey (Tom) Sena, Colton (Amber) VanDerWerff, Shana (Cody) Fisher, and Kirby VanDerWerff; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Orvin (Sharon) Bertsch, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Florine was preceded in death by her parents and her brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Joanie Bertsch.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Florine’s arrangements.

  5. Our dearest sympathy to the family.  Flo was an amazing lady and I loved singing with her in the church choir and having her at the Hymn Sing at the Good Sam when she no longer could sing with us at choir.  Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

She gave Cheryl & i lots of motherly advice thru high school and when we roomed together our 1st year of college. I always wanted her to teach me piano but we never got around to it. RIP 🙏
