Francis Marshall, 79, of Highmore, died Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at the Highmore Healthcare Center.

Funeral services were 10:30a.m. Monday, February 12 at the United Methodist Church, Highmore with Pastor Jenene Earl officiating. Burial was in the Highmore Cemetery, directed by Luze Funeral Home of Highmore. Visitation was held from 5:00-7:00p.m. Sunday, February 11 with a 7:00p.m. prayer service at the Luze Funeral Home.

Francis was born at home to Margaret July and Joe Marshall on April 4, 1927. He grew up in the Blunt/Onida area and attended Felicia Country School for his eight years of elementary education. He served in the Korean War. Following the war, he worked for various farmers in the Blunt/Onida area.

Francis met LaVonne Nesheim in Pierre and were married on June 28, 1959 at the First Methodist Church in Highmore. Three children were born to this union: Douglas, Greg, and Cindy. They farmed and ranched in Hyde County their entire life.

Francis enjoyed the outdoors. He especially enjoyed working with his cattle and putting up hay. When he wasn’t tending to his livestock, he could be found tinkering in his shop. He enjoyed visiting with family, friends, and neighbors. He was known to strike up a conversation with anybody. Some of the other activities he enjoyed were playing cards, bowling, cross-stitch, and reading.

Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife LaVonne; his three children: Douglas and Susan Marshall of Pierre, Greg and Jill Marshall of Huron, and Cindy and Mark Phillips of Pierre; five grandchildren: Danielle, Jessica, Lindsey, Darlene, and Caroline; three great grandchildren: Zachary, Kyle, and Kaiden; one brother: Joe Marshall; three sisters: Dorothy Kennedy, Helen Roddewig, and Alice Koch; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Ken, Ray, and Bernie; sister-in-law: Sylvia; brother-in-law: John; and a niece: Penny.
