Garland Dean Maupin Sr. was born on February 22, 1945, at Old Cheyenne Agency, SD, to Arthur and Eveline (Hodgkiss) Maupin. He grew up in the Old Agency and Promise areas. Garland attended Old Agency School, later enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was honorably discharged in December 1967.

On September 1, 1970, Garland married Jennifer Bordeaux in Pierre, SD. Six children were born to this union: Tracy, Darlyn Ann, Terri Rose, Tanna, Garland Jr., and baby Ted.

Garland began working in Sioux City, IA, before being transferred to Denver, CO. He later moved his family back to Eagle Butte, where he began working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, retiring after more than 30 years of service.

Garland was an outdoorsman who was well known for his love of hunting and fishing with his children, nephews, and grandchildren. He was truly a jack of all trades and loved spending time with his grandkids. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Eveline (Hodgkiss) Maupin; son, Tracy Dean Maupin; daughter, Tanna Maupin; grandson, Taten Maupin; great-grandsons, Oheyesa and Baby Maupin; three brothers, Charlie, Leonard, and Terry Maupin; and one sister, Carol Ann O’Neal.

  7. Faith (Sinclair) Swenson Rowe says:

I will always remember our summer times at grandad and grandmom’s ranch. We cousins were fishing, swiming, picking fruit for grandmom’s canning, digging potatoes in their garden, riding the red wagon down the hills and hoping we made it to the bottom before it crashed, and just the close friendship we shared. Rest in peace with all those relations who went before us.

  8. Garland was a wonderful man. So sorry for your loss 🙂
