Private family services will be held on Friday, November 6, 2020, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wecota, with Pastor Colin Ford and Pastor Peter Utecht presiding. Burial will follow at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Wecota.
Gertrude Clara Joachim was born to Christian and Beata (Bauer) Joachim on October 30, 1917 at Venturia, ND. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. At an early age, she moved with her parents to Delmont, SD and later to Agar. This is where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Agar High School in 1935.
Gertrude attended Northern Normal, Aberdeen, for one year and received a first-grade teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools for six years.
She met William Hahler of the Wecota area, and they were married in 1942. They lived on the farm and this is where their children Gary, Diann, and Donald were raised.
Gertrude was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, L.W.M.L., and American Legion Auxiliary. She taught Sunday school and was a 4-H leader.
Having a garden, canning, baking, sewing, quilting, crocheting afghans, and doing crossword puzzles were things she enjoyed.
After her husband’s untimely death in 1970, Gertrude continued to live on the farm until 2009 when she moved to Redfield to be closer to her daughter.
Survivors are her children: Gary Hahler, Ipswich, Diann (Alan) Steinheuser, Redfield, and Donald Hahler, Faulkton; brother, Paul Joachim, Kalamath Falls, OR; sister-in-law, Audrey Joachim, Milbank; five grandchildren: Melanie Hahler, Kristin Esser, Kendra (Chad) Huff, Colton (Alex) Hahler, and Kylee Amato; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her husband, William; her parents; brothers: Walter, Victor, and Benjamin; half-sisters: Bertha Peters and Olga Gohr; and daughters-in-law: Jewel Hahler and Barbara Hahler.
Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church, PO Box 106, Wecota, SD 57438 and Messiah Lutheran Church, 225 1st St E, Redfield SD 57469.
The family kindly requests that all flower arrangements are ordered from Country Classics in Redfield (Ph. 605-472-1125).
