Grace Campbell, 95, of Highmore, passed away Monday, March 15, 2010 at the Highmore Healthcare Center.

Funeral service were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation was held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Luze Funeral Home, Highmore.

Grace Annabell was born in north Hyde County to Oscar and Jessie (McGlashan) Gunderson on December 4, 1914. She attended country school and graduated from Highmore High School in 1931 at the age of 16. After graduation, she served for a time as deputy Hyde County Treasurer and later as a secretary for the Sully Buttes Telephone Cooperative for 16 years. Throughout her adult life, her primary focus was on nurturing her family and making her home a welcoming place for all who entered.

On January 26, 1941, Grace married Floyd Joseph Campbell. To this union, two sons were born: Roger and Allen. Grace lived in Hyde County her entire life with the exception of the years during World War II. During that time, she served the war effort by working as a chief flight dispatcher at Lodwick School of Aeronautics in Lakeland, Florida and worked in industry in Denver, Colorado.

Grace was a 50+ year member of P.E.O., a long-time member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Highmore, and was active in the VFW Auxiliary for over five decades. She enjoyed playing cards and socializing with her many friends. She was a woman of unshakable faith, devoted wife and mother and was a true friend to all that she met along her life’s journey.

Her memory will be cherished by her two sons: Roger K. (Judy) Campbell of Yankton, SD and Allen R. (Jane) Campbell of Rapid City, SD; three grandchildren: Heather Smith of Omaha, NE, Ryan (Kelly Sue) Campbell of Valley Springs, SD, and Blake Campbell of Rapid City, SD; four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd; three brothers: Charles, Robert and Ronald Gunderson; and one sister, Mary Anderson.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 8th Ave 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Grace's arrangements.

  4. Grace it was always an honor to care for you. I especially enjoyed the way your eyes would light up, “twinkle” and you would get that little grin when we would share a funny story or we would talk about your dancing days. Already missing you.

  5. Grace was one of the first people I met when we first moved here, she made me feel very welcome. I grew to know her when Floyd was admitted to the Nursing Home.She spent many a hour with him there then when she began to live there! Wonderful lady

  9. Roger and Allen, I was so sorry I could not be in Highmore for dear Grace’s funeral. She was such a good neighbor to Mom and Dad for many years and I should have been present to represent the Swanson family.

    Grace was just a delight to know and ever-so tolerant of our Mom when she became disoriented in her later years.

    I kept pretty good track of you two through her reports when I used to get over to Highmore but that has been years ago. I hope you and your families are both well and that you know we who loved Grace are grieving with you.

  10. Grace was such a wonderful lady, ‘lady’ being the key word! We have so many memories of her and she will be missed. Dean always had a special place for her in his heart, she was a very special aunt to him.
