Grover Maynard Scott was born to Charles Scott and Sophie (Gets Off) Scott at home in a log cabin near LaPlant, SD on March 6, 1910, coming from a Proud Tiospaye. Grover was the great grandson of Chief One Horn and Stands On Ground and was a close blood relative to Chief Big Foot (Spotted Elk), Touch the Cloud and The Warrior Crazy Horse.
Throughout his long prosperous life, he enjoyed many things, he loved the bible and was a devout Christian, he was a lifelong member of the YMCA and UCC Church and later was appointed a trustee of the church. He also loved horses and in his younger years he was the first Native American to compete in the very first Sitting Bull Stampede placing 3rd in bull riding. On January 27, 1934 he began his life with Adelia Bird Necklace and to his union they had a son who passed at birth and two daughters, Arlene and Beverly. He later met Catherine Pretty Weasel and she became his lifelong companion until her death in 1990. He also raised his grandchildren Aaron, Cheryl and Lydia Johnson after the death their mother Arlene in 1965.
In Grover’s passing, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe lost their oldest living tribal member and the family lost the last member of a very respected and gracious generation marking an end to an era in their family history.

To the family of Lala Groover, this man has brought us such happiness and always happy to see the grandchildren….we will hold him in our hearts forever…he will be with our precious Cherie.
There is only one way to describe Grover, he was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He always knew everyone and had to visit awbile, checking on your family and how they were. Everyone in Eagle Butte knew him and loved him. He will be missed by everyone and held in their memories on the Cheyenne River reservation. My prayers are with his family. God Bless You, Grover and rest in Peace. Marie Kost
