Harold F. Macek, 82, of Faulkton, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2023, at Faulkton Senior Living.

A Celebration of Life will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 7, 2023, at the United Church of Faulkton with Pastor Shawn Stoll presiding.

Harold Francis Macek was born June 15, 1940, in Rapid City, SD to Joseph Bernard Macek and Esther M. (Gebhart) Macek. Since 1943, he grew up on the family farm south of Faulkton.

Harold graduated from Faulkton High School in 1958. He spent four years in the Army National Guard as an equipment operator. He then attended South Dakota State University in Brookings and studied electrical engineering where he met Georgia Rae Pourier. They married in 1965 and had four daughters: Jewel McGee, Yvonne Macek, Pauline Kempf and Monica Macek. They settled in Faulkton and raised their daughters until their divorce in 1979. Harold married Dianne Hoffman on November 26, 2004.

Harold worked road construction and built several miles of interstate highway. In 1980 Harold bought his uncle’s machine shop and with his partner, Bill Keldsen, opened K&M Machine Shop. Later, Bill sold his half of the shop to Harold and went into the tree moving business with the tree moving machine that they built. Harold owned and operated the K&M Machine Shop until his death.

Harold created several unique inventions from his shop including the alternating tread stair featured in the House and Garden magazine in the article about the grain bin house. He made several spindle trailers for the electric company, and constructed railings for main street shops. Harold repaired everything metal; usually saying, “there just isn’t enough iron it”. Harold also enjoyed building with wood, and he built an oak crib for his youngest grandson.

When customers entered his shop and heard obscenities, they knew some manufacturer had not built a piece of equipment sturdy enough.

He had a faith in God that everything would work out as it should. Harold instilled in his children and others around him ‘a job worth doing is worth doing well’.

He is survived by his wife, Dianne Macek; daughters: Jewel (Rodney) McGee, Yvonne Macek, Pauline (Troy) Kempf and Monica Macek (Wayde Brodkorb); stepchildren: Leanne Hoffman, Kenneth (Amy) Hoffman, and John (Kim) Hoffman; grandchildren: Heather Iron Cloud, Joseph, Alisa, Raven, and Curtis Horse, Aaron Kills Back, Waylon (Sierra) Macek, and Blake Brodkorb; step grandchildren: Samantha (Glenn) Aymar, Tate, Morgan, and Joe Hoffman, Carson and Brynn Stoeser; great grandchildren: Deshawnee, Diamond, Atrau Iron Cloud, Vincent, Carmen, Rayden, Adonis and Aaron Jr. Kills Back, Evangeline Davis, Charlie and Lola White Buffalo, Angel Horse, and  there will be a new baby, James Macek, due in June; three brothers: Joe (Ellen), Robert (Ann), and Richard (Janet) Macek; and one sister, Sharon Calloway.

Harold was preceded in death by his mother, Esther (Gebhart) Macek; father, Joseph Macek; and brother-in-law, Alex Calloway.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Harold’s arrangements.
