Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Agar Hall, Agar, SD with Pastor Jeff Adel officiating. Burial  followed in the Onida Cemetery. Visitation was held  from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 25, 2013 at Luce Funeral Home, Gettysburg with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.

Harold was born to Frank and Gertrude (Buck) Weischedel on October 11, 1914. He attended Pearl Country School, Cass Country School and Agar High School. Frank and Gertrude had four children. Gertrude passed away on April 9, 1918. Frank later remarried to Nellie Suman and they had five children.

At the age of 17, in 1931, Harold left his home in South Dakota to search for work in Colorado. He worked as a ranch hand for his aunt and uncle near McClave, CO. He later moved to Lamar, CO where he met and married Rose Peters on April 20, 1938. They moved to Gunnison, CO, where Harold again worked as a ranch hand. In 1941, Harold and Rose moved to Baldwin, CO, where Harold worked in the coal mine for six years. During that time, Harold and Rose had three children; Corinne, Warren and Stanley.

In 1947, Harold moved his family to Tillamook, Oregon where he worked in the timber with his brother, Oliver. In 1949, Harold and Rose moved back to the Weischedel family farm in Sully County due to Frank Weischedel’s poor health. Harold’s youngest son, Cecil was born in 1950.

Farming was in Harold’s blood. Harold bought the family farm in 1958 and devoted his life to working the land that had been his father’s homestead since 1883.

Harold was a self-made man and learned many trades along the way. He may have been short in stature, but he was tall in courage and never afraid to try something new. Harold lived by the values of integrity, honesty, and hard-work which he balanced with a good joke now and then, heart-felt chuckles, an unforgettable smile, and a kind and helpful spirit. He loved his horses, working the land, visiting with family and friends, and making homemade ice cream in the old hand-crank mixer. Harold was a member of the United Methodist Church of Agar and was active in Sully County 4-H.

Harold was everyone’s favorite and he was deeply loved. He will be missed, but his memory will live on in our hearts until me meet him again in Heaven.

Harold is survived by his children: Corinne (Charles) Ditmar of Yankton, SD, Warren Weischedel of Agar, SD, and Cecil Weischedel of Black Hawk, SD; one brother, Leo “Bud” Weischedel of Hot Springs, SD; three sisters: Mildred Holmes of Mason, OH, Joyce Puckett of Batesburg, SC and Irma Brandt of Rapid City, SD; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rose (Peters) Weischedel; two brothers: Oliver and Clayton Weischedel; two sisters: Doris Sterling and Pearl Spears; and one son, Stanley Weischedel.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Harold’s arrangements.

  1. marianne weischedel-sowards says:

He will be greatly missed but is in a better place.

  2. What a kind and gentle man! Harold was my mom’s (Dorothy Jost) neighbor, he always got her mail daily for her and was such a dear friend. They can greet each other in heaven. Blessings to his family. Mary Lou Jost Miller

  3. My sympathy to you all. Harold was such a special little man. I enjoyed his time here with us. Harold could always bring a smile to my face with his quick whit and spunk…he was always my “short pants”. I pray that God gives you comfort now and in the days to come. Cherish his memories.

  4. Sorry to hear of the loss, but so happy that you got to have him for as long as you did.

  5. Wilbert and Mary Fenger says:

We have known Harold for some time. He had bought seed wheat from us. Then I saw him at the Villa often. He was a man of small stature but what a huge smile, great laugh and a joke ready for everyone. Keep all your memories close. Our sympathy to you all.

  6. Cecil, sorry to hear about your dad’s passing. My heart goes out to you as I just lost my own father. As time goes by you feel better, you just don’t forget.. Enjoy the happy moments.
