Herbert L. Bowar, 93, Faulkton, SD died Sunday, February 5, 2012, at the Faulkton Healthcare Center after suffering the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Herb was born November 3, 1918 in Neilsville, Wisconsin to Frank and Anna (Duren) Bowar.  His family moved to South Dakota in October of 1919.  Herb grew up in the rural Orient/Faulkton area, going to school in Orient and graduating in 1936.

On November 14, 1942, he married Gladine Wright at Miller South Dakota.  They made their home on the family farm four miles south of Faulkton, where he farmed and ranched until he retired.  Four children became a part of this union, Linda, Tom, Janice and Jerry.

He was a member of St Thomas Catholic Church in Faulkton, CCD instructor for two years, member and financial secretary for the Knights of Columbus for many years.  He served on the school board for the Orient school and also served on the board for the Faulk County Memorial Hospital.  He was a member of the American Cattlemen’s Breeders Association and helped develop the Amerifax Beef breed which began as the Beef Friesian Society.  Herb was a member of the Lions Club and drove school bus for a number of years.  For extra jobs he measured grain bins and measured land acres for the ASCS office in Faulkton.  For extra money he would haul coal by pickup loads to homes around town during the cold winter months.  He led by example with his devotion to his faith and family.  His gentleness and wonderful smile will be greatly missed.  Herb always said that he “never met a stranger”.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Gladine of Faulkton; children Linda (Bernie) Vogel of Faulkton; Tom (Mary) Bowar of Huron; Janice (Dale) Miller of San Antonio, TX; Jerry (Sandy) Bowar of Faulkton, SD.; eight grandchildren and twenty three great-grandchildren.
