A memorial service will be held at 5:00 P.M., Thursday, February 2, 2023, Luce Funeral Home, Faulkton. Due to the limited amounts of seats available if you are unable to join us there, please go to J&J’s where it will be live streamed, and we will join you afterwards for “happy hour”.

Jim Speck was born December 14, 1953, to Marvin and Donna (Sievers) Speck in Faulkton. He attended the Faulkton Area School District for 14 years. Yes, there’s a bonus year in there, which allowed him to join his buddy Marv Hutchinson’s class. During his years at FHS, Jim excelled at many sports. He loved to share the details of tournaments and matches as he recalled them with family and friends. Boxing was an extracurricular sport that became a passion of Jim’s. Some would say he was a bit of a legend around here.

After graduation in 1973 Jim proudly purchased J&J Bar, aka the Pool Hall, which he co-owned until 2011. He continued to be employed there until his passing. That’s 50 years of fond memories and cherished friendships.

Jim was united in marriage to Peggy Hutchinson in 1986. Together they raised three children, Ashley (Bryan) Schmidt, Rocky (Kaylee Beidler) Speck, and Colby Speck (Bethany Kneifl).

Jim has six grandchildren: Ethan, Evan, Dawsyn, and Tyson Schmidt, Maverick and Piper Speck.

Jim loved hunting, collecting antiques, snowmobiling, and working in his garden. His favorite days in the garden were when family and friends joined him there, especially Brice and Nicole Cunningham. His grandsons referred to it as Potato Mountain.

Lake Faulkton became Jim’s home in 2012, he enjoyed all seasons there and looked forward to friends and family stopping by for a cold one. He especially looked forward to his brother-in-law Greg’s weeklong visits each year.

Jim was a proud lifetime member of the NRA, a very active member of the local snowmobile club, and the Faulk County Trap Club. He belonged to the J&J bowling & dart teams for many years. Jim was recently honored for his many years of service on the Faulkton Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his children; grandchildren; bonus “son”, Brice (Nicole) Cunningham; brothers: Chuck (Mary) Speck, David Speck, and Steve (Denise) Speck; beloved sister, Lori (Greg) Verjan; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and nephew, Travis Speck.

Per Jim’s wishes, a memorial trapshoot will be held at the Faulk County Trap Club this spring. Details will be shared via Facebook.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Jim’s arrangements.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I am so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

  2. I’m so sorry for your loss.

  3. Oh wow. I was so saddened to read this news. I’ve always looked up to Jim. He was a legend in FHS and area sports and athletic conditioning and ability. He has been such an asset to the community for many years. I know he will be missed by us all.

  4. To all the Speck family,
There isn't one person who went thru Faulkton that didn't at some time have a connection with Jim. It could have been in high school sports, community activities or just walking into the pool hall. He was always a steady presence, a familiar face and a friend to many. We are so sorry to hear of his passing but his memory will remain in a lot of hearts and there will be tears and laughter.

  5. Deepest sympathy to the Speck family and to all of Jim’s friends.Heavy is the heart🙏

  6. So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I planted hundreds and hundreds of trees with Jim for three years while we lived in Cresbard. Enjoyed working with him. As we drove around the area, he would point out the thousands and thousands of trees he planted over the many year. Somewhere he has a list of flat type rocks he was going to gather up through out Faulk county to do some landscaping with. I hope he got a chance to gather some of them. Sending my sympathy to his family and extended family. He was a great co-worker and praying your fond memories help comfort you during this difficult time. Rest in peace Jim.

  7. So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Fellow class of '73 member.

  8. So sorry to hear of the passing of Jim. Although life sends you down different paths and you don't keep in touch the way you would like to, I have some great memories of Jim, Peg and the entire Speck Family. I will go back to my high school days when I spent more time at the pool hall than school and Peg cooked me lunch every day! I became good friends of Jim and Peg my freshman year and will never forget the time spent there thru high school. Many days when I was supposed to be in class, I instead spent it at the pool hall shooting pool and snooker. At the time my teachers and principal were not impressed and gave me plenty of time (3 day suspensions) to pay the price. I can tell you that the street smarts gained from the time spent at the pool hall were one of the best classes that I could have possibly taken to prepare for life in the real world. Jim was a great guy, I stood beside him a few times behind the pool hall against some out of town rowdy customers, but not to worry because Jim was one tough guy! Rest in peace Jim and my thoughts and prayers are certainly with the entire Speck family..

  9. Being a friend of Jim's was full of adventures. Most of these adventures were legal and some were dangerous, but we could always count on Jim and trust him, traits that are hard to find these days.
    Rest in peace my friend.

  10. Jim was one of my first friends in Faulkton. He will be missed. So long old friend.
