James Jost, 67, of Gettysburg passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD, resulting from complications arising from a fall while ice fishing.

A celebration of Jim’s life was held at 10:00a.m., Saturday, January 26, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg with Pastors Susan O’Connell and Gary Walter officiating. Burial was in the Pembroke Cemetery with Military Honors by the American Legion Post #135. Visitations was held  from 2:00 to 5:00p.m. Friday at the Luce Funeral Home in Gettysburg with a 7:00p.m. prayer service at the church.

James Edwin Jost was born July 31, 1940 to Edwin and Dorothy (Starkey) Jost at Hoven, South Dakota. He attended rural elementary schooling, Hoven High School and graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1958. Following his school he enlisted with the United States Air Force where he made his career for the next twenty years. He then went to work for Ken-Way Eaton for ten years and then the Utah Workman’s Comp for ten years working as a safety consultant for both places.

Jim was previously married to Carol Waltz to which three children were born; Rob, Kim and Jeff.

In 1998 he retired back to Gettysburg where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with Sheron, traveling, snowmobiling, and any other outdoor activities. His biggest enjoyment about his return was being able to go to the farm to watch the pheasants, deer and take care of the cats.

Jim was united in marriage on December 30, 2005 to Sheron (Shaw) Archer at Apache Junction, AZ.

He was a member of the American Legion, Gettysburg United Methodist Church and the Ionic Lodge #83, Gettysburg.

Left to cherish Jim’s life is his wife: Sheron Archer of Gettysburg; his children: Rob (Fiancée, Melissa) Jost, Kim (Karl) Kersey and Jeff (Trisha) Jost all of Layton, UT, Stana (Kip) Green of Box Elder, Bonnie (Craig) Bleeker of Sioux Falls, Robbin (Kevin) Paxton of Onida, Jeri Wieczorek of Ft. Pierre and JoLynda (Selwyn) Jones of Rapid City; Grandchildren: Lexie, Shawn and Breanna Jost, Kyle Kersey, Denver and Piper Jost, Jace & Jade Blackwell, Jaelyn, Nicole & Austin Green, Hope & Keith Bleeker, Desiray (Derek) Nelson, Dalaney Paxton, Cody and Callan Paxton, Chad, Kenna, Wayde and Reid Wieczorek, Sean, Heather and Dejanna Jones; Great Grandchildren: Tayveon Ware and Mackenzie Nelson; his mother: Dorothy Jost of Gettysburg; his siblings: Leland (Virginia) Jost of Alexandria, VA, Leila (Dave) Giesler of Murdo, Mary Lou (Lee) Miller of Albuquerque, NM; his mother-in-law: Alta Shaw of Pierre; bother and sisters-in-law: Lila (Duane) Puffer of Redfield, SD, Vicki (Shorty) Tassler of Pierre and John (Lisa) Shaw of Creston, IA; “adopted son” Justin Cronin of Gettysburg and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim was preceded in death by his father and one granddaughter, Crystal Paxton.

Memorials are directed to the Ionic Lodge #83, 906 E Commercial Ave, Gettysburg, SD 57742 and American Legion Post #135, 112 S Exene, Gettysburg, SD 57442.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg.

    I am the granddaughter of Viola (Bierman) Schuh and I go to church with Bobbi and Gary. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Jim was taken too suddenly and tragically. Thank God for faith though, we know that he is in the arms of Jesus. May He bless those of you left to grieve and help you to heal. You will be in my prayers.

    I am truly saddened by the sudden loss of Jim. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. Jim was a good man, father, grandfather and friend who will be sorely missed by many. Lexie, Sean and Breanna have many wonderful memories of Grandpa Jim and it gives me comfort to know that he will forever be watching over them.

The last time I talked to Jim was days before when he was very concerned about getting more ushers for the Gettysburg United Methodist Church lined up for regular services. He was in fact…doing the Lord’s work just before his sudden severe accident. God bless him…

  11. I had a great time Pheasant hunting with Jim 3 months ago, and will miss the passion he had for life in the outdoors. We had a few beers and several great laughs, Jim will be missed by all.

  12. I just recieved the Potter County News and noted Jim’s passing. My sympathies to Jims family. I have not had the opportunity to visit with Jim for a long time but I went to grade school with him and will remember him as kind and caring person. So very sorry.
