Joan M. Hageman, 82, of Gettysburg, passed away Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Bowdle Nursing Home, Bowdle, SD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg, with Fr. Brian Simon presiding. Burial will follow in St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery, Hoven. Wake services will be 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 22, 2023, with visitation one hour prior at the church.
Joan Martha Swenson was born June 12, 1941, to Harry and Anna (Schmidt) at rural Montrose, SD. She attended grade school and high school in Montrose. Joan went on to attend Stewarts Beauty School in Sioux Falls.
In 1960, Joan moved to Aberdeen and was employed by Vanity Beauty Shop. There she met friends that introduced her to her future husband, Robert Hageman. They were married on January 8, 1966.
Joan loved antiques, finding a good deal, and collecting barbies and tea sets. One of Joan’s favorite entertainers was Elvis, and she truly enjoyed his memorabilia. She also enjoyed baking and sewing in her earlier years.
Joan started working at The Burg in 1998 and was employed there until her diagnosis with Myasthenia Gravis in 2003. She faced many challenges with the disease but never complained and always had a smile! She had a kind heart and saw good in everything.
Joan served many years with the American Legion Auxiliary and served as president. She was also an active member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society.
Those left to cherish her life are her children: Allen (Crystal), Gettysburg, Kevin (Audra), Hoven, and Kristi (Jamie) Torstenson, Watertown; grandchildren: Bridget (Jason) Osterman, Andover, Colten Hageman (Jamie Patton), Gettysburg, Alyson (Jared) Anderson, Groton, Dakota and Austin Jensen, Hoven, and Seth Torstenson, Watertown; great grandchildren: Logan, Kinsley, and Noralyn Osterman, Andover and Dayton Anderson, Groton; sisters: Marie Steffen, Sioux Falls and Millie (Terry) Troyer, Colorado Springs, CO; sister-in-law, Carrie Glodt, Gettysburg; brother-in-law, Leo Hageman, Chesterfield, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Hageman; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Delores and Francis DeRouchey, Marion Hageman, Pat Glodt, Peggy Hageman, and Don Steffen.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Joan’s arrangements.




Our condolences to Joans family. We are so sorry to hear of her passing. She and Bob were always big supporters of teachers and education. We have fond memories of both of them. May she rest in peace now with our Lord. God bless all of you. From the Petersen family .
Joan was a sweet, kind and gentle person, and while she had fought her disease for years she never complained. I have so many lovely memories of her through the years. May she rest in peace. Condolences to her family and friends.
