Joseph Patrick Sprenger was born on August 2, 1965, at the Faulk County Memorial Hospital to George and Loyola (Anglin) Sprenger. He graduated from Polo High School in 1983 and worked on the family farm, continuing to do so until his passing. Joe spent many years milking cows for Mark and Delilah Cotton, and more recently helped Schulz Farms throughout the year.
In 1993, Joe married Sandy Bowar on September 3, in Faulkton. Two children were welcomed to the family, son Kirby and daughter Haley.
Joe’s unique sense of humor kept everyone around him laughing. He and his brothers took camping to a whole new level with Dutch Oven cooking where Joe’s peach cobbler was a highlight. No camping trip was ever a success without the brothers enjoying very late nights of card playing.
At home, Joe enjoyed woodworking, creating various projects for both home and farm. Joe also enjoyed hunting and was known for leading the annual Sprenger sausage-making gatherings at which there were more card and dice games with friends and family. Joe was the epitome of a good neighbor and friend. He was always ready to lend a hand without hesitation. He was the first person to show up when someone was in need.
Joe was an active member of his community, volunteering with the Polo Fire Department, Orient Community Club and served as a board member of the Orient Farmers Oil Company.
Joe is survived by his wife, Sandy Bowar Sprenger of Orient; daughter, Haley (age 21), a nursing student at South Dakota State University in Brookings; brothers: Mike (Carol) of Brookings, Gary (Peg) of Orient, Jim (Sharon Rons) of Sioux Falls, and Steve (DeAnn) of Pierre; and sisters: Kathy (Gary) Sarvis of Spearfish, Patty Sprenger (Dave Griffin) of North St. Paul, MN, Mary (Jerry) Nelson of Philip, Karen (Vern) Bult of Wahpeton, ND, Deb (Jim) Peterson of Sioux Falls, and Carol Sprenger Wagner (Jay) of Early, IA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Anne (Mark) Beckstrand of Sioux Falls, Karen (Terry) Dickman of Sioux Falls, Marlene (Mark) Dreesen of Brockway, MT, Barry (Shelly) Bowar of Bemidji, MN, and Holly (Todd) Jacobson, of Harrisburg; and father-in-law, Eugene (Jeanette) Bowar. Also grateful for experiencing his sense of humor are his numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kirby (age 19); his parents, George and Loyola Sprenger; mother-in-law, Billie Bowar; nephew, Brian Bult; and infant niece, Laura Jean Peterson.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Joe’s arrangements.
