June 7, 1949 ~ March 4, 2023

John M. Peterman, 73, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 4, 2023, at his home in Mesa, AZ.

Graveside service with military honors will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Sunbeam Cemetery, rural St. Lawrence, SD.

Mike was born on June 7, 1949, to John and Marion Peterman in Redfield, SD. He was the third and last of the Peterman siblings and he'd pride himself on being mom's favorite son. After Mike graduated from high school, he went on to serve in the U.S. Army.

After the military, he moved to California where he started his pool business, kickstarting a 40-year career in the field.

In 1988, Mike met the rose of his life, Rose Peterman in Mesa, AZ.  Mike and Rose went on to have a son, John.  Mike only had one child of his descent, but proudly raised others throughout his life.  He raised his stepdaughters, Rhoda and Lisa, during his first marriage and his stepdaughter, Elena, in his marriage to Rose.

Mike was always the class clown and loved making everyone smile, which began early in his childhood years while playing on the farm with his older brothers, Tom and Charles and into his retirement years while hanging out in his garage with his best friend, Manly.  Mike could always brighten up the day with one of his favorite constantly repeated jokes.

Mike was most proud of becoming a grandpa on October 3, 2022, when he had his first grandson, Johnny, who was named after him, of course. Mike got to spend his last months watching his beloved grandson grow the first five months of his life, checking on him every day to make sure his parents were spoiling him enough.

Mike leaves to cherish his loving memory, his brothers: Tom and Charles; his daughters: Elena, Rhoda, and Lisa; his son: John; his grandsons: Johnny, Ethan, and Dylan; and a host of other family and friends whom he made an impact on in his life.

Reck Funeral Home has been entrusted with John's arrangements.

  3. My sympathies to Mike’s family. I hadn’t seen him for years but have many great memories from when we were in school and roaming the Burdette countryside. Dwana Chipman Kolda

  4. Honestly did not realize that Mike’s full name was John Michael!  He and several other senior boys whom I had the pleasure of sharing a study hall table with as a freshman in high school loved to give me a “bad time”!  However over the years we all became very good friends!  Was so saddened to hear of Mikes passing!  He was one of a kind!  RIP Mike and fly high with the angels….Your friend, “Pudge”

  5. Our deepest condolences 💐 prayers to all, may the lord bless you and  give you peace and comfort.

  6. It's hard to believe you're gone dad. You had such a big part of raising myself & Rhoda in our younger years. Wish my family could of spent a little more time with you.
I just can't seem to find the right words. We'll miss you and will always love you.
Lisa, Brian, Michaela & Hannah Gray

  7. Sorry to hear of John's passing. I knew the family while living in St. Lawrence, SD. I remember Charles during those days!

  8. I will miss you dearly, Mike. See you at the reunion in heaven.

  9. I was really sad to hear that Mike had passed! He was a sweet friend to me, one of the boys in our ‘hood (Burdette) who always treated me with ornery respect. Smiling and cheerful. I hadn’t seen Mike for many years but had hoped to meet up again one day. A big loss to his family I’m sure. Condolences to you all and to Charlie and Tom. Warmly Sharon Strasburg

  10. Peterman and my dad had been best friends ever since we moved into the neighborhood when I was 2 years old. Peterman and Rose created a second home and family for me to grow up with. He made my life more fun and always cooked me grilled cheese sandwiches and played pranks on me. I miss him very very much. I have many fond memories that I will cherish forever especially his laughter and hugs.
