October 11, 1951 ~ June 12, 2022

Larry Meier, 70, of Cresbard, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2022, at Faulkton Area Medical Center.

A visitation will be held from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Luce Funeral Home, Faulkton. This is a time for friends and family to gather together and reminisce about Larry. There will be a funeral service with Janeen and sons only.

Larry Meier was born October 11, 1951, to Anton and Leona (Johnson) Meier in Faulkton, SD. He was baptized and later confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church of Cresbard. Larry attended and graduated from Cresbard High School. He continued his education at South Dakota State University and Northern State University.

On September 11, 1971, Larry married his high school sweetheart, Janeen Kono at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wecota. They welcomed two sons: Anthony and Joshua.

After college, Larry had a variety of jobs including Dakota Farmer Printing in Aberdeen, Martyn-Edwards Car Dealership as assistant service manager, and in 1975 he went to work for Miller Farms in Cresbard until 1980.  From 1975 to 1976 he purchased his parents farm where he farmed and ranched until 1999 when he turned the family farm over to his two sons. Not only did he farm, but Larry was also a true cattleman. He spent 30 + years soliciting cattle for Aberdeen Livestock.  In 1999, Larry started work at Hand County Implement/Pioneer Garage where he sold machinery until his sudden tragic blindness on August 18, 2010, following open-heart surgery. This led to him attending a rehab for the blind. Following rehab, he and Janeen helped their sons on the farm until 2018.

During his lifetime, Larry enjoyed attending car shows, sale barn auctions, and camping trips to the Black Hills. His love for camping led him to purchase a second home in Hill City. Larry had many accomplishments some of which are being a church elder, church treasurer, 18-year on the FSA County committee, and nine years on the Cresbard School Board. Illness eventually took him to live at Faulkton Senior Living in October 2021.

Larry is survived by his wife, Janeen; sons: Anthony and Joshua; sisters: Norma Miller, Bonnie (Harold) Geisert Way, and Donna Herrick Peterson; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parent: Anton and Leona Meier; siblings: Roger Meier, June Finley, and Gloria Schaefer; and one nephew.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Larry’s arrangements.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Janeen,
So sorry for the loss of Larry.  Cherish the memories of the time you shared!  You are in my thoughts.

  2. Larry was one of the best friends I ever had. We first met during the 1970 Spring semester at Northern State after I had transferred in from USD. The following year we were roommates along with two other guys at an older 2 story home in SW Aberdeen. We often cruised Main Street in Aberdeen in his beautiful yellow Firebird convertible (which, unfortunately, was in the body shop about as much as not! Can't imagine why?!) On many evenings after getting tired of studying we would go to Lager's Inn for red beer and chicken gizzards. He left school after our second year and he and Janine got married that summer if memory serves me correctly. He was a groomsman at my wedding in July 1973. We got together from time to time after that but as often happens in life, our paths drifted apart, and I had not seen him for many years. Peggy and I moved back to Aberdeen in July 2021 and learned Larry was suffering from serious health problems. Although I wanted to visit him, to my deep regret his health and COVID concerns kept that from happening. Larry was a great guy, and I will always be grateful that I was able to call him a friend. Janine, Peggy and I extend you, Anthony and Joshua our deepest and heartfelt sympathy and prayers during this sad time. Dick & Peggy Neill

  3. Larry was my step dads nephew. Melvin Meier of Timber Lake SD. Melvin and To ny were brothers. Sorry to hear he has journeyed on. Sympathy for his wife and family. He suffers no more.

  4. So sorry to hear about Larry. He was a good friend and former coworker.
My thought and prayers are with the family.

  5. Janeen, Anthony, and Joshua: I was blessed to have Larry as my uncle and to know he was your husband and father. He was true and faithful to you and to his family in Christ at Concordia, a band of sinners and saints who confess the faith in the One who overcame sin, cross, death, and grave (and now lives triumphant until the great and awesome Day). Freely has He given His own treasures to Larry and to all who repent and believe. Thanking and praising our Heavenly Father for the gift of life, sacrifice, farming, family, and love shared through Uncle Larry. Peace to you in the Savior, Jesus Christ+ Derek & Gretchen

  6. My sincere sympathy to you, Janeen & your sons, in the loss of Larry.  May you find peace in the memories you share of him.  Thinking of you.                                                                    Fran Aden                                                                                         CHS Class of 1969

  7. Janeen and family so sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you!

  8. Janeen and Family:
I was saddened to learn of Larry's passing. I feel fortunate that I knew him during the time that he owned properties in the Hill City area. He was a genuine and thoughtful man.
