Lois Hargens, 95, of Miller, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at her home.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Miller, with Pastor Nancy Eckels, officiating.  Burial will follow at Howell Cemetery, rural Miller.  Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, 2021 followed by a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.  Masks are encouraged at all services.

For those unable to attend, the funeral service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website.

Lois Jean was born on a farm northwest of Wessington to Fred and Myrtle (Brown) Warren on September 17, 1925. The family moved to Wessington for six months then moved to Vayland in 1935. Four years later they moved to Miller.

She attended country school until the fourth grade; graduated from Miller High School in 1943; and entered Cadet Nurse Corp in June 1943, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. She graduated from St. Mary’s on June 1, 1946, and worked in the old two-story hospital on main street in Miller until January 1, 1948. Lois went back to work in 1957 when several firemen were burned in an explosion in Highmore. She worked 32 years at Hand County Memorial Hospital and retired in 1989.

Lois married George Hargens on February 9, 1948, and they lived on the George Hargens, Sr. farmstead 16 miles north of Miller until 1957; then they moved to their own farm 21 miles north of Miller. To this union four children were born: Dennis, Thomas, Dale and Sheila. She moved to Miller following George’s death in March 2000.

Lois was a member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church from 1948 to 1970; Orient Lutheran Church from 1970 to 2000; and Trinity Lutheran Church since 2000. She was an organist at St. Michael’s and Orient Lutheran for 50 years. She held many offices in the church women’s groups, Orient Lutheran Church board, and held various conference offices.

Lois was an avid quilter after retiring in 1989. She gave many quilts to relatives and friends. She loved to make angel food cakes with peanut butter frosting for birthdays.

She is survived by two sons: Thomas (Nancy), Dale (Susan); daughter, Sheila (Tim) Nold; daughter-in-law, Peggy Hargens; seven grandchildren: Erica Hargens, Kyle (Shaina) Hargens, Andrea (Bertin) Flores, Janice (Tim) Gilbert, Jeremy (Ashley) Hargens, Kristin (Drew) Kolda, and Alexander Nold; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lowell (Patty) Warren; one sister-in-law, Joyce Warren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; three brothers: Lloyd, Kenneth and Keith; son, Dennis; and grandson, Justin.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Lois’ arrangements.

How saddened we are to lose Lois—I know she was ready to meet her Lord, but we weren’t ready to let her go.  I will always treasure our friendship—the quilt she gifted me—the many conversations and quilting time we spent at the church.  Her hands were busy to the end—God truly blest her and her family—God bless her memory.

  5. So sorry to see Lois’ passing but know she is at peace, experiencing never ending joy and love beyond description. I always love seeing her amazing quilts, what a gift, 
    Sheila know how sad I am knowing your mom is gone but thank God we get forever. Know I am praying for peace and comfort for you and your brothers.

  8. Lois was a very special lady in my life. I never did any nursing with her but we did food co-op together and later quilting classes. I always envied her talent for hand quilting. She touched many lives and will be missed. God bless and comfort all of her family.

  16. I shall greatly miss seeing Lois on our trips to SD. We would meet for lunch at the Ranch Cafe and talk about our Brown family ancestors. On a couple of trips we would visit cemeteries and try to find the old homesteads. My wife, Pat, and Lois would share "quitting" stories. Lois made beautiful quilts and was so generous with them. I enjoyed the 12 minute video with Lois, family and friends. Rest in Peace, Good and faithful servant!

  17. Sorry to hear of Lois’ passing. Since seeing Tom at our high school reunion I had been remembering Lois’ kindness as one of my earliest memories when our families visited on farm Sunday’s. I’m sure she’s left you with loving memories.
