Lyle Melius, 87, of Cresbard, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen, surrounded by his family.

Memorial services was held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at the United Methodist Church, Cresbard, with Rev. John Hale and Rev. Thomas Carlson presiding. Private burial was held in the Cresbard Cemetery.

Lyle Eugene Melius’ life began October 3, 1931 when he was born to Edwin and Frankie (Horning) Melius on the family farm near Cresbard. He remained on this farm his entire life with the exception of a whole two months.

Lyle attended school in Cresbard, graduating in 1949. While attending school, he met Yvonne Holt and they were married on June 7, 1953. He was a loving husband and together they raised their five children.

Lyle spent his time farming the family farm, raising crops and cattle. In his free time, one would find him touring the countryside on the Ranger, checking crops, enjoying Vonnie’s cooking, woodworking, making furniture for his family or sitting in his favorite chair reading or watching his favorite TV shows with his dogs on his lap. After retiring, mowing became his pastime.

Lyle was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Cresbard, a member of the Star and the Masons. Most of all he enjoyed being a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Those that knew him will miss his bubbly spirit, his smile, and definitely his laugh.

Those left to cherish his life are his wife of 66 years, Yvonne; his children: Miles (Jerean), Winner, Shelley (Chuck) Simon, Hoven, Philip (Stephanie), Lee Summit, MO, Owen (Shellie), Olathe, KS, and Kary (Pat) Bowar, Cresbard; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; sister, Eila Blikeng, California; sister-in-law, Donna McGough, Chelsea, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Frankie Melius; sister: Darlene (Clarence) Holmberg; mother and father-in-law: Howard and Doris Holt; and brothers and sister-in-law: Bob Blikeng, Chuck and Jean Johnson, David McGough, and Pete Holt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to the Cresbard Methodist Church, Cresbard Cemetery, or the Cresbard Community Center.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Lyle’s arrangements.

    To the Melius Family:
We are so very sorry for your loss.  Lyle will certainly be missed by so many, but his legacy will live on in those who loved him.  In reading his story, I had to smile at the love of wood working.  I remember a certain construction project at the Connell house where  my Mom’s table may or may not have been cut while completing the project. Cherish the happy memories!

  3. Vonnie, Miles, Shelley, Philip, Owen, Kary and families, Across the miles we send you our Sympathy, Support, and Prayers. Your lives are forever marked by Lyles life. Hold dear the memories! Lyle was such a good steward of family, land, and community. I will cherish the memories of all the overnight stays at Lyle and Vonnie's home while attending high school at Cresbard with my best friend, Shelley. My heart aches at the thought of not being able to attend the funeral to celebrate the life of Lyle Melius but your family will definitely be in my prayers. May Eternal Rest be Granted onto Lyle and May Perpetual Light Shine Upon him. God's blessing to you all. Wayne and Barb (Cuppy) Heien

  4. Always loved going to Great Uncle Lyle's house for swimming and riding the Honda three wheeler. We always loved to come and get trunk loads of the always good sweetcorn they would grow every year and usually would bring home a kitten or two whenever possible. Best part was dropping things down the built in Laundry Chute and running to the basement always amazed to find it in the same basket below. Lyle will be greatly missed but forever remembered as a wonderful loving Great Uncle!

  5. Aunt Vonnie and Family, I am so sorry to hear this news. Lyle is one I always looked up to and had the utmost respect for. One of the hardest working men I will ever know. I will miss his laugh…. Love you all…
