Mabel Ellen Holt, 86, of Orient, passed away Friday, January 14, 2011 at the Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Miller with Rev. Bob Ohnstad and Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial was at Prairie View Cemetery, Orient.  Visitation was held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 18, 2011 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Reck Funeral Home in Miller.

Mabel Ellen Hargens was born on August 14, 1924 in Howell Township to George and Bessie (Synder) Hargens. She attended country school and Miller High School. She furthered her education at Black Hills State. She taught country school for a short time before her marriage.

She married Sheldon Holt on December 24, 1945 at the present farm home. She began her married life in Howell Township and moved later to her home in Park Township.

She was very active at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church where she was Sunday School Superintendant and teacher. Later, she was an active member at Orient Lutheran Church where she participated in Ladies Aid. She was a volunteer 4-H Leader.

She enjoyed being outdoors gardening and tending to her animals. For miles around, she was known for her cooking so there was always a full house at mealtime.

Survivors include two sons, Theron and Warner Holt (Donna Palmer) of Orient; two daughters, Mary (Bob) Roesler of Paonia, CO, and Janet (Neal) Johnson of Miller; son-in-law, Lyle Nichols of Palisade, CO; nine grandchildren: Chad and Tammi Roesler, Traci (Joe) Stroh, Tera (Mike Eells) Holt, Jared (Kim) Holt, Karri (Jon) Arey, Stephanie (Matt) Cavenee, Melissa (Ryan) Hegg, and Ashley Johnson; nine great-grandchildren; six brothers: Edward (Charlene) Hargens, Lester (Carolyn) Hargens, Marvin (Donna) Hargens, Charles (Joyce) Hargens, Richard (Delores) Hargens, Raymond (Linda) Hargens; one sister, Hazel Clement; sister-in-law, Lois Hargens; brother-in-law, Herb Stender; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Phyllis; great-grandson, Brendan; brother, George; sister Eileen Stender and sister-in-law, Carol Hargens.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Mabel's arrangements.
