In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent to the Hamiel family for a tribute in honor of Marge's memory, that will be placed at the St. Ann's Catholic Church at a later date.

Margaret Hamiel, 96, of Miller, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society, Miller.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Father Paul Josten, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Miller. A visitation will be 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service and rosary at 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 31, 2022, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Miller. 

Margaret (Sweeney) Hamiel was born September 15, 1925, in Winner, South Dakota to Frank & Viola (Paine) Sweeney. She grew up south of Kennebec, South Dakota on a family farm and graduated from Kennebec High School in 1943. She then went on to Omaha to work with the World War II relief efforts. After a few years there, she moved back to Kennebec and while attending a dance one evening, she met the love of her life, Robert W. Hamiel. To this union, three sons were born: Greg 1956, Tom 1958, and Vince 1960. In 1963, Bob and Marge moved their young family to Miller, and they started their own home improvement business, and she ran the company finances until her retirement.

Religion was an incredibly important part of Marge’s life. She was a lifelong member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church, where she was on the St. Ann’s altar society committee, a CCD teacher, and eucharistic minister. Marge was always available and offering to help in any capacity she could. Some of her favorite activities involved bowling, playing cards with her bridge club, vacationing with her husband (especially to Hawaii), and you would always find her in the stands supporting any and all of her sons’ sporting events.

After completing a genealogy research study, Marge was found to be 100% Irish. You would often hear her say “I am the luckiest mother in the world”, but we all knew that we were the lucky ones. She loved her grandchildren just as dearly, but not near as much as they adored her. Grandma was never short on her special chocolate chip cookies and treats. The Schwan’s man must have nearly gone out of business the day she moved into the nursing home, as she always had her fridge stocked full of goodies for all who visited. Marge was a sweet, kind-hearted person who always put everyone else’s needs before her own. As her family gathers to celebrate her life, there is no shortage of fond memories, laughs, and an overwhelming feeling of how lucky we were to know her and be loved by her.

Marge’s whole family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and residents at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller for all the love and care they showed Marge in her time there.

Left to celebrate her life are her sons: Greg (Cheryl) Hamiel, Tom (Jean) Hamiel, and Vince (Kerry) Hamiel; grandchildren: Chris (Teresa) Hamiel, Jennifer (Evan) Shaffer, Eric (Kris) Hamiel, Patrick (Chrissy) Hamiel, Marc (Kelsi) Hamiel, Scott Hamiel, Kate (Jake) Waring, Alexis Hamiel, and Lera Hamiel; great grandchildren: Taylor Young, Sommer Hamiel, Emeri Hamiel, Eliza Hamiel, Hobbes Hamiel, Trey Hamiel, Hunter Wipf-Hamiel, and Langston Waring.

Marge was greeted in Heaven by her husband, Robert Hamiel; parents: Frank & Viola Sweeney; and siblings: Barbara Hubbard, Jean Whitney, and Bill Sweeney.
