Martin William Schneider was born on July 22, 1923, at Gettysburg, SD. He attended country school and high school at Gettysburg. He lived on the family farm until he joined the Navy in December 1942. He shipped out on the troop transport USS Leanorwood from Norfolk VA and was assigned to the USS Concord at the Panama Canal. His ship patroled the west coast of South America and operated out of Panama. In the Fall of 1943 his ship carried Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd on a special reconnaissance mission to study airbase sites on islands of the S.E. Pacific. His ship then was assigned to the northern Pacific where it operated off the Aleutian Islands, making raids on Japan until the wars end. At the end of the war his ship went back through the Panama Canal to Boston and Philadelphia where the USS Concord was decommissioned. Martin was discharged in December 1945 at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital.
When he returned to SD he farmed with his father and brother until he entered barber school. After going to barber school, he worked in Rapid City, Sturgis and Spearfish. He came to Miller in June of 1960 and bought the ""Englecke Klip Joint"" barber shop in downtown Miller. Later he moved his shop to his home. He retired from barbering in 1996 and spent time traveling to south Texas. Martin was also a gunsmith and locksmith. He loved to build things including his famous ""trike"" out of a Harley motorcycle and volkswagon and lots of odds and ends. His constant companion was always a poodle. He enjoyed attending his ships reunions every year and visiting with his old shipmates.
Martin is survived by one sister, JoAnn (Melvin) Heck of Kerrville, TX, a sister-in-law Marlys Schneider of Gettysburg, 8 nephews Don (Brenda) Scheller of the Phillipines, Doug (Donna) Scheller of Rapid City, David Scheller of Rochelle Park, NJ, Bob (Kris) Schneider of Pierre, Jim Schneider, Aurora, NE, Mike (Julie) Heck of Lake Ridge, VA, Tim (Jackie) Heck of Wildomar, CA, Larry (Gaye Nell) Heck of Los Altos, CA; 3 nieces Pat Hardie, Spearfish, Kathy Schneider, Council Bluffs, IA, and Renee (Guy) Cornett, Austin, TX and several great nieces and nephews.
