Mary Johnson, 60, of Miller, passed away Saturday, September 19, 2020 at her home in Miller.
A memorial service was held 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 9, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller, Rev. Brian Jones, officiating.
Mary was born December 13, 1959 in Mitchell, SD to Earl and Margaret (McCarl) Johnson. She went on to SDSU where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Biological Science.
Mary lived in various places including Sioux Falls, Buffalo and of course Miller, her hometown. She worked as County Executive Director in the FSA offices in Harding, Jerald, Hand, and Hyde counties. Mary loved her job and all the great friends she met everywhere she went.
Mary was no stranger to travel, she loved visiting places all over the United States with the gals attending NASCOE conventions. They also enjoyed fishing together at tournaments in Pierre.
She served on the Miller City Council and enjoyed being an active member in the First Presbyterian church. She loved collecting pottery, playing cribbage with Heath, especially when she won, and everything to do with cats. She especially loved fall hunting season with the “Johnson Crew” down at Uncle Wallace and Aunt Darlene’s farm.
Mary will be missed for her infectious smile and kind soul.
She is survived by her brother, Randy (Gwen) Johnson; nephews: Heath and Tigh Johnson; step father, Carroll Morford, Highmore; Polly Ediger, Miller; Ben, Emily and Pepper Morford, OR; Billie and Emerson St. Martins, WI; Melissa and Dominic Morford, Yankton; Zachery and Destiny Morford, Yankton; and all her special friends.

Mary was a caring person. She took the time to mail greeting cards to her friends and family with a nice hand written message to acknowledge events in their life. Mary thought it meant more by sending a written note. Such a strong supporter of NASCOE that we will certainly miss not seeing Mary anymore.

We were so sorry to hear that Mary had passed away. Mary and I developed a lifelong friendship after high school. I returned to South Dakota to go to SDSU in the fall of 1980. My husband, Dave, was in the Air Force and would be out of the country until March 1981. So I decided to start college that fall. Through the “Miller Grape Vine”, I found out that Mary was looking for a room mate. We ended up sharing a house. In March, Dave was discharged from the Air Force and moved in with us for the remainder of school year, about 2 months. Mary always enjoyed calling him “Roomie” whenever we would see her from then on. She was a dear friend to anyone she met and will be missed by SO MANY people. Our condolences to her family and to her many friends. Mary (Zeller) and Dave Roth
