Mary Gene Jirsa, 98, of Highmore, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Highmore Health.
Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. mountain time, Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
Mary Gene (Howard) Jirsa was born February 6, 1926, in Rural Aurora County, to Paul and Mary (Alt) Howard. She grew up with 11 brothers and sisters making for a busy yet exciting childhood. She graduated high school with a love for reading and genealogy. Following high school, Mary and Roland Jirsa were married on February 16, 1946, in Mitchell, South Dakota. They were blessed with 3 children: James, Randall, and Nikki. Their family lived in Mt. Vernon, Pukwana, Chamberlain, and Highmore throughout their lives.
Mary enjoyed being a housewife and mother to her beloved family. She was involved in the Chamberlain VFW and the AARP. Mary spent her free time crocheting and sewing along with continuing her love for reading. She also enjoyed putting puzzles together both by herself and with friends and family.
Mary is survived by her son, Randall (Linda); daughter, Nikk; sister, Fara Fay Day; and 8 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her beloved son, James; husband, Roland; parents, Paul and Mary Alt; brother, Frank; brothers: Stub; Robert, John, Billy, Teddy, Junior sisters: Carol, Lora, Ruth, and LaVee.
