Maxine Hoffert, 87, of Onaka, passed away, Friday, October 17, at the Faulkton Area Medical Center.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 20, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Onaka with Fr. Lance Oser officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Visitation was held from 1:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 19, 2008 at the Luce Funeral Home in Faulkton with a 7:00 p.m. wake service at the church.

Maxine Letha Ryman was born to Percy and Edna (Schnoor) Ryman on April 5, 1921 at Mansfield, South Dakota. She attended school in the Mansfield area before the family moved to Onaka in 1932.

Maxine married John W. Hoffert on October 31, 1939. They farmed south of Onaka until they retired in 1977 and moved into Onaka. They enjoyed traveling and took many group tours to various places over the years. Maxine’s favorite things were traveling, camping and fishing. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. Everyone felt welcome at Maxine and John’s home.

After John’s death in 1989, Maxine continued to live in Onaka. She enjoyed reading and outings with friends. She was a member of St John the Baptist Catholic Church.

In 1998 she moved to Faulkton. In 2004 she moved to Bethesda Town Square in Aberdeen. In May of 2008 she moved to the Faulkton Healthcare Center where she resided until the time of her death.

Maxine is survived by one son: John Jr. (Jane) of Onaka; one daughter: Joan (Art) Gutenkauf of Faulkton; 4 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Vivian Vetch of Aberdeen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one infant daughter, two brothers and one sister.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Maxine's arrangements.

    I was so surprised and sad, when I read your moms obituary in the paper.

    I know she was such a good lady, and such a friendly person, and I really liked her. Joan, you know how we 3 giggled together! I won’t forget her.
