Melvin Boschee was born on May 23, 1925, to Jacob and Mary Boschee in Java, SD. He graduated from Java High School. He worked on a farm with his father until he met the gal of his dreams and married Florence Job on June 30, 1946 at Hosmer. They farmed north of Gettysburg until 1951 when they moved into Gettysburg. Melvin became a self-taught electrician and opened an electric motor shop.
In 1956 he moved to Pierre when he was offered a job as an electrician at the Oahe project until its completion, then went on to Big Bend Dam at Ft. Thompson in 1964 at which time he moved to Highmore where he lived the rest of his days.
Melvin was hired as a maintenance electrician, later was promoted to power plant technician and retired in 1986 as the assistant superintendent, having worked his way to this prestigious position during his 22 years there. He was very proud of the fact that he knew every aspect of Big Bend. He shared that pride by taking a variety of people on numerous tours of the facility.
After his retirement, Mel continued doing electrical work, rewinding motors, and general fix-it jobs. If it was broke, Mel could fix it. He also was very involved with his church, Our Savior Lutheran Church, and the Highmore Senior Center.
Melvin enjoyed fishing and camping through the years and shared that love with his wife, Florence, and his children.
Melvin sadly lost Florence on November 23, 1993. This left him as an eligible bachelor again until he caught the eye of Gladine McGirr and they were married on April 3, 1999. Melvin and Gladine were able to travel together and happily kept each other company until the time of his death. They were the best of friends.
Melvin was not one to express his love through words. Instead he showed his love and caring by quietly helping those in need. His wisdom and wit will be missed.
Survivors include his wife, Gladine Boschee, of Highmore; son, Joel Boschee and wife, Linda; son Dan Boschee and wife, Deb; daughter, Penny Derieg and husband, Danny; daughter, Mary Kay Boschee; daughter-in-law, Janell Boschee; daughter-in-law, Janet Boschee; step-daughter, LaVaughn Busse and husband, Jan; step-daughter, Kay Cady and husband, Tom; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his loving wife, Florence Boschee; son, Duane Boschee; and son, Don Boschee.
In
lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Our Savior Lutheran Church,
Highmore or the Hyde County Senior Center.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Mel's arrangements.

God bless you all. Mel was good guy. Take joy in the memories.
So sorry to hear about Mel. He was a great guy. I remember when we used to take motors up to him and he would rewind them I think. He will be with Florence now, and how nice is that?
To the Family of Melvin Boschee:
Kathy just told us yesterday (we had been out of town) that Melvin had passed away. We want to express our sympathy at the loss of your Dad. He was a very special person – I remember many, many fun times with your parents. I spent many times (while you all were small) at your parent’s home on the farm and in Gettysburg babysitting and helping out in the home. They were truly like a brother and sister to me. Your Dad will be sorely missed, as your Mom has been. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. God’s Blessings to you and your families.

Like a passing breeze, Mel made my Grandma happy and because of that I miss him. I remember being at my sister Stephanie’s wedding and if you can imagine, I was fighting my grandma for “air time” – we were both giddy as heck about the new loves in our lives – and we were filling each other in on some of the details. What a cool thing – me 20 something and grandma 70 something and both experiencing that wonderful feeling of new love. We were sitting in the hotel lobby and she was telling me about how she went on date with Mel and how he “reached for her hand.” I’ll never forget that moment with my grandma or what Mel brought to my grandma – a new love, thank you Mel. We will miss you.
So very sorry for your loss. Mel was a wonderful guy. He always had a smile for everyone. Prayers to you all.

We were saddened to read of Mel’s passing in the Highmore Herald. Mel’s life was part of ours through knowing his children and his life with Gladine. Our condolences to Mel’s family.
Just heard of Mel’s passing. So sorry to hear the news. Mel was always a gentleman and a kind and considerate person. It was always good to have them come across the street for one of their visits with the Campbell family.
He will be missed. Our lives are enhanced by his friendship.
Oh, I am so sad. Just heard about your dad. I have so many great memories of both your mom and dad from when I was a kid and will certainly treasure those memories. Mel was such a nice man, he will be greatly missed.
