Nada J. Mewes, 96, of Highmore, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at the Highmore Health, Highmore, SD.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 5, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, Highmore with Pastor Kori Lehrkamp officiating. Burial will be in the Highmore Cemetery.  Visitation was held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 4, 2012 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.

Nada Josphine Millar was born January 3, 1916 on the family farm in Cora Township, Sully County, South Dakota to John and Elizabeth (Klein) Millar.  She was one of twelve children.  She received her education in rural school and high school in Lebanon and Agar, South Dakota.

Nada married John Mewes of Highmore, South Dakota on June 26, 1939.  Two children were born to that union and they adopted one other child. 

Nada lived all her life in Highmore, except for a short stay in 2003 in Courtyard Assisted Living in Miller before moving to the Highmore Healthcare Center in July of 2003.  Nada was a member of the Methodist church and the United Methodist Women, as well as the Rebecca Lodge.  She also belonged to Sunshine Garden Club and took great pride in her yard, prize winning flowers and Spruce trees.  Her home was her delight.

In August of 1991 she had the privilege of helping celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the homesteading of her childhood home, the Millar family farm.

Nada enjoyed music, dancing, knitting, and crocheting many Afghans which she passed on to family and friends.  She and John owned and operated John Mewes Trucking Line, getting his start while working as a mechanic for Milard Keil.

Grateful to have shared in Nada’s life were her two sons: Mervin (Doris) Mewes of Highmore and Merlin Mewes of Viborg; five grandchildren: Danny (Julie) Mewes of Collinsville, AL, Gary (Judi) Mewes of Rapid City, Cheryl (Larry) Johnson of Cushing, IA, John (Tammy) Mewes of Jamestown, ND, and Patricia (Lynn) Harrell of St. Lawrence; and 13 great grandchildren: Paige and Seth, Payton, Spencer, Brittany and Michala, Cassie, Paxton, Morgan, Jordyn, Colton, Colby, and Ethan.

Nada was preceded in death by her husband, John Mewes on September 17, 1963; son, Darrell; five sisters: Maude, Joyce, Laurie, Vera, and Glena; six brothers: Orville, Loren, John, Jesse, Earl, and Kelly.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Nada’s arrangements.

  4. It is with deep regret and sorrow that we heard of Aunt Nada’s passing. We will not be able to attend the services, but please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We shall miss Nada at the Millar reunions, where she told many a story!
