Odon Edward Corr was born Sept 24, 1933 in Ellendale, MN to Edward and Borghild (Halvorson) Corr.  In 1937, his family moved to a farm near Summit, SD and later moved into town where his mother and siblings ran the Summit Cafe.  He learned to skin and trap from his mother, loved riding horses, and enjoyed the Spring Valley Rodeo Club on Sundays.  After graduating from Summit High School, he married Carolyn Lien in 1954 and to this union 4 children were born.  Also, in 1954, Odon enlisted in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, and was stationed in Alaska where he was assigned to the ski patrol. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he attended three years at SDSU.

In 1962, Odon accepted a position with the Fur, Fish and Game and moved his family to Miller.  The next 20 years were spent trying to control the coyote population for the state government.  Along the trapline, he found numerous ranch and farm friends that continued to be a large part of his life.  He trapped privately in the 1970’s when furs were at a premium.  In 1981, he began his next 15 years working for the federal government in animal damage control, living in Steele, ND.  In 1996, he retired and moved to his heaven on earth, the “Corr Ranch”, near Wessington Springs.  In 2007, Odon married Joan Husman.

Odon raised registered Airedale Terriers for many years.  His Airedale bloodline is spread throughout the United States.  Later, his well-known Jackdale breed became used by many hunters and trappers throughout America.

Odon had a deep respect and passion for animals and the outdoors.  Hunting, trapping, and fishing were all second nature to Odon and he thoroughly enjoyed the stories behind all the adventures. He was a long-time member of Fur Takers of America and National Trappers Association.  He annually traveled to national conventions where he often demonstrated his trapping skills and peddled his educational DVD on coyote trapping.  The conventions became an annual reunion for many of his trapping friends throughout the nation.

Odon is fondly remembered by his family, including his children: daughter, Jodie (Michael) Dirksen, Nancy (Wayne Kolbeck) Froning, and Karie (Brian VanBuren) Waters; grandchildren: Blake (Rachael) Dirksen, Riley (Loni) Dirksen, Margaret (Alex) Rechkemmer, Amber (Kevin) Werdel, Keaton Corr, Jerrica (Bronze) Charbonneau, Shawn (Jesse) Block, Weston (Chelsea) Waters, Matt (Natasha) Waters; 11 great grandchildren; sisters: Anita (Keith) Sharf, Barb (Kent) McCreight; cousins: Omar (Janice) Halvorson, Mary (Al) Goulet; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Odon was preceded in death by both wives, sister, Corinne Kohn; son, Gregory Corr; son in law, David Froning; and great grandchild, Oliver Block.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Odon’s arrangements.

I was fortunate to work with, learn from, and supervise Odon for a short time before he retired from the USDA- Animal Damage Control Program in Steele, North Dakota. 11. Odon is a trapping legend and was one of a very  few master trappers in the US. He refined coyote trapping to a science although he could catch any animal that walked on four legs. He was as my good friend for47 years, I will miss him especially when I hear the sound of geese honking on a frosty morning or a coyote howling at sun down.

  12. Jodie, Nancy, Karie and families,  Our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with all of you!  I have such fond memories of so many good times at the Corr house growing up!!!  Cherish all your memories!!!  Love to all of you – Cindy and Jerry Jacobsen

  13. Thoughts and prayers for Carrie and your siblings on the loss of your father.

  14. From the North Dakota Fur Takers Association, we would like to express our sincere condolences, to a great trapper. When Odon was stationed in Steele we saw him quite often, in later years I would see him at conventions and get to talk at length. We in the trapping world are sure going to miss him! Bruce Willyard, treasurer NDFTA

  15. I just learned of his passing this week. My heart goes out to all the family of the loss of a man I had the honor of knowing for just a few short years. I miss the great talks we had together and his enthusiasm for great music. He really enjoyed the drums at church and always commented to me about how good it sounded. Blessings on each of you.
