Paul Clement, 86, of Faulkton, died Monday, March 29, 2010 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Faulkton with Father Joji Itukulapati and Father Thomas Clement officiating. Burial followed in the St. Thomas Cemetery, Faulkton. Visitation was held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Monday, April 5, 2010 at the funeral home with a 7:00 p.m. wake service at the church.

Paul Joseph was born October 5, 1923 to Hubert John and Elizabeth Mary (Klausing) Clement in Grover Hill, Ohio. He attended parochial school in Polo for eight years of grade school and one semester of high school. Not many children attended high school, as they were needed on the family farm. Paul milked 14 to 16 cows by hand, fed cattle, and cared for the work horses. He also worked as a hired man for the neighbors, Philip Schwartz and Leonard and Clarence Naber.

On April 21, 1947, Paul married Clara Brown at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Miller. Following their marriage, they farmed in Hand County. In 1958, they purchased a farm in Faulk County.

Paul was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. He also served on many boards including the school board, HSC board, minute man FEM, and township board. Because of his love for horses, he helped start the Faulk County Saddle Club. Since being a small boy, he had been interested in horses. In his youth, he participated in rodeos as a bareback rider. He got a standing ovation when he rode his bucking horse at a rodeo in Huron. Later in life, he participated in calf roping, team roping, and Old Timers’ breakaway. In 1985, he was the Old Timers’ Rodeo Champion at Dupree, S.D. Due to health problems, he had to give up being a rodeo contestant and become a spectator. Paul enjoyed watching his grandchildren compete in rodeos.

Paul’s health was deteriorating and he moved to Avera Mother Joseph Manor prior to his death.

Grateful for having shared his life are his seven sons: Roger Clement of Watertown, SD, Mike (Margie) Clement of Rio Rico, AZ, Bob (Tina) Clement of Ridgeview, SD, Steve (Jamie) Clement of Pawhuska, OK, Randy (Cindy) Clement of LaSalle, CO, Greg Clement of Greeley, CO and Doug (Glenna) Clement of Faulkton, SD; three daughters: Marilyn (Jeff) Anderson of Mobridge, SD, Carol (Harry) Day of Lander, WY and Lynette (Doug) Heinz of Ipswich, SD; 24 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one brother, Hubert Clement of Miller, SD; one sister, Lenore Venjohn of Miller; three sister-in-laws: Eileen and Betty Clement of Miller, SD and Dolores Clement of Orient, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Clara; one sister, Valeta Hardes; five brothers: Bernard, Richard, Ernest, John and Louis Clement; and daughter-in-law, Bettye Clement.

  7. Our thoughts and prayers are with Paul’s family.

It’s been a few years since I have seen and talked to Paul. We used to team rope together years ago at all the ropin’s that we both attended. I always considered Paul as a fine gentleman and a Good Friend.

  8. Jim and Dianne Clement Groopper says:

  10. I am so sorry, to hear about Uncle Paul, I suppose alot of you don’t remember me, but I am Valetta’s and X Hardes daughter. I remember as a small child, being out at your place and Uncle Paul, teaching me how to ride horses, which in turn, started me on my journey, of loving horses and owning many over the years.
I have no excuse for not being in contact with any of the family, over the past several years, except for Aunt Lanore, please accept, my deepest sympathy and may God’s grace and his strenght, help you at this time. Deb
PS. I would truly love to hear from any of you, if you so wish.
