Phil Goebel, 76, of Gettysburg passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at Avera Missouri River Health Center, Gettysburg.
Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 2, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg with Fr. Joe Holzhauser presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. A prayer service will be 7:00 p.m., Sunday, February 1, 2026, at the church.
Philip Mathew Goebel was born on March 25, 1949, at Westphal Maternity Home in Gettysburg, South Dakota, to William and Rose (Griffith) Goebel. He received his education in Gettysburg, graduating in 1967.
Phil enlisted in the United States Army on October 22, 1969, and was honorably discharged on July 23, 1971. Following his service, he returned to Gettysburg, where he married Aleta Baum on October 21, 1971. Together they raised their two sons, Michael and Mark.
Philβs greatest love was the land. He enjoyed farming, especially working alongside his brother Dean and their boys. He cherished time spent with his five grandchildren.
In his quieter moments, Phil loved watching Gunsmoke and scrolling TikTok and Facebook, often laughing along with comedians and jokes. He also enjoyed taking their dog, Aspen, on car rides, pointing out birds and kittens just to get her excited.
Phil was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He was a proud 16-year member of the Gettysburg Volunteer Fire Department and also served as an EMT and a member of the Gettysburg School Board.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Aleta of Gettysburg; sons: Michael (Kim) and Mark (April) Goebel, all of Gettysburg; grandchildren, Macy (Eli) Jones of Miller, Cassidy Goebel (Trevor Klinnert) and Greta Goebel of Sioux Falls, Mason Goebel, and Gabby Goebel of Gettysburg; sisters-in-law, Sharon Goebel of Aberdeen and Linda Baum Ekberg of Mitchell; brother, Dean Goebel of Gettysburg; sisters: Bonnie (Roger) Hagenlock of Pierre, Mary (Donn) Quiett of Gettysburg, Barbara (Winston) Forred (Sioux Falls) and Cathy (Donnie) Vetch of Aberdeen; and a multitude of loving nieces and nephews.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Donna and Joyce; brother, Dennis; sisters-in-law, Pam Goebel and Darlene Baum Niederberger; brothers-in-law, Alfred Baum Jr. and David Niederberger; and nephew, Alfred βBillβ Baum III.
