Rita L. Charger, 36, of Houston, TX and formerly of Eagle Butte, SD, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Harbor Hospice in Houston, TX. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. MST, Monday, February 19, 2024, at CRST Bingo Hall, Eagle Butte. Burial will follow in the LaPlant Congregational Cemetery. Wake services will be 6:00 p.m., Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the hall with a procession from the 4-mile at 4:00 p.m. 

Rita Lauris Charger was born October 5, 1987, at Pine Ridge, SD, to Iris Scott and Ronald Charger. She grew up in Eagle Butte, but later moved to various places: LaPlant, White Horse, Georgia, Chicago, and Bismarck. She eventually made her home in Houston, Texas.

She worked in many places. Wherever Rita went, she found a job. She was a happy-go-lucky person who had a heart of gold. She enjoyed laughing and joking around and made many friends wherever she went. She was a kind, loyal, honest, loving, and caring friend to many. Her greatest love was her grandchild, Kasten.

Rita leaves behind her children: Dameion, Levi, Emilya, and Walter III; grandchild, Kasten; mother, Iris Scott; special friend, Rondell Jones; aunties and uncles: Leatrice Scott, Jenny LeBeau, Rita Shaving, Sonya Shaving, Germaine Dunn, Clarice Edwards, Arlys Gray, Ford Hill, and Floyd Hill; sisters: Tina Miner, Libby Miner, and Jo Miner (Mike Shaving); brothers, Blaine Dog Eagle and Gil Dog Eagle; paternal aunts and uncles: Darlene Sands, Marlene Charger, Wayne Two Hawks, and Norman Charger; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father, Ronald Charger; sister, Candace Scott Charger; brother, Dustin Scott; grandmothers, Martina Philips and Zenobia Charger; grandfather, Elmer Scott; aunt, Marion Charger; uncles: Kenneth Scott, Myron Scott, Vincent Scott, and James Scott; aunt, Candace Scott; and several cousins.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Rita’s arrangements. 

A Wake was held on February 18, 2024 at 6:00 PM at CRST Bingo Hall, Jefferson St in Eagle Butte, SD 57625

    Rita is my first cousin. Her father Ronald is my late mother, Linda Charger's brother. We took Rita in the summer of 2000/2001. We shared many good times together back home on the Rez. We used to video chat a lot in the recent years. I can't believe she is gone. She was like a sister to me. I know she missed her dad a lot. May she rest in peace. Toksa ake wachiyankinkte. <3

    Rita was my birth mother. I didn't get to know her after I got adopted but I always wondered how she was doing out there. I would pray that one day I would get to see her again. I'm glad she's in a better place and my condolences to Rita's loved ones.
