Roger Edward Mastel was born January 14, 1955 to Edward Peter and Joann (Merkel) Mastel at the Hand County Hospital in Miller, SD.
Roger started working at an early age delivering the Plainsman for many years. At age 14, he went to work at Community Oil where he worked for Lester and Carolyn Hargens for 40 years. Roger and his sister worked together for 25 of those 40 years. At the time of death, he worked for Twin Valley Tires.
Roger was a faithful and caring son. He spent his entire life living in Miller, SD at home with his mother. Every weekend they went somewhere together unless the weather was bad or he was attending a trap shoot.
Roger could be found shooting his Alfermann gun at trap shoots all over the USA. He was at a trap shoot in Oklahoma City during the bombing of the federal building. He immediately called his mother to tell her he was ok. She remembers the sirens were so loud it was hard to hear his voice.
Roger started shooting trap in 1984. He traveled to many places and was honored by being inducted into the Hall of Fame. He made many good friends through the sport and was a State Champion several years. Roger’s sense of humor was legendary; many friends and family have many stories they will always remember.
Roger left behind his mother, Joann; sister, Peggy (Mike) Namanny; two nephews; Gary (Brenda) Nammany and Clint (Angie) Nammany; great nephews: Malachi Namanny, Zachary Namanny, and Dom Namanny; and great niece, Piper Namanny; and all his friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Edward Mastel in 1998.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Roger's arrangements.

I am very sorry for your loss. Roger was a great guy and I have shot trap with him for many years. He was a great advocate for our sport and he was a true friend to so many. I will remember him by all his great stories and the pranks he pulled on the other shooter. HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED!
I met Roger at Crooks Gun Club during a trap shoot several years ago. He was very cordial and a friend to everyone. A great shooter who will be missed but not forgotten.
Roger and Tom were good friends. They had fun pheasant hunting. Roger would spot a bird and hit the lock button so Tom couldn't get out. Tom would always remember Roger when we went to Sams. He would bring him back oranges. Do you suppose they have oranges in heaven? I am so sorry for your loss.
