December 23, 1938 ~ June 26, 2025
Sister Addie Morris, 86, of Eagle Butte, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Monument Health, Rapid City, SD.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. MDT, Saturday, July 5, 2025, at CEB Auditorium, Eagle Butte. Burial will follow at the Eagle Butte Cemetery.
Addie Mae Morris was born December 23, 1938, to Johnny and Fallis (Worley) Morris in Cushing Oklahoma. Addie was one of thirteen children in the Morris family.
Addie attended elementary school at Booker T Washington School and Cushing High School in Cushing, Oklahoma. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Langston University, OK in 1967. Addie later attended USD in Vermillion, SD; NDSU in Fargo, ND; and Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD.
Addie left her home in Oklahoma and made her way to South Dakota in the 1960’s. In 1967 she began her career as a home economics teacher at the Cheyenne-Eagle Butte school. She served in this capacity until 1981. During this time, she received a certificate of special achievement from the United States Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs. She was recognized for her diligent efforts to encourage her students to do their very best. This would be a testament as she dedicated her life to serving others.
Addie attended the Eagle Butte Church of God and in 1970 she joined as a member. She often shared her story of how she felt the call of God. In 1978 she was appointed as lay pastor of the congregation. Sister Addie received her Exhorter’s license in 1980 and would later earn her Ordained Minister license in 2008.
Addie continued to work as she pastored full-time. From 1982 t0 1992 she served as the Food Service Coordinator, a substitute teacher, and a teacher’s assistant at the Eagle Butte School District 20-1. Addie forged many friendships throughout her teaching career with her colleagues and students.
Sister Addie enjoyed cooking, and her Indian Tacos were famous. Whether it was a taco sale, a church luncheon, or a sandwich to be served at home from her door, she took time to make preparations and ensure everything was just right.
Sister Addie pastored at the Eagle Butte Church of God from 1978 until 2023. She was a servant of Jesus Christ, and for over four decades she gave her life serving, preaching, teaching, and ministering the gospel from generation to generation. She was a pioneer for the youth camp that began in 1985 and is still in existence today, serving with Pauline McGinty. They have taken scores of young people traveling to Lake Pickeral and Lake Richmond year after year. It was the highlight of many summers. In addition to youth camp, Addie and Pauline had a bible book club. They traveled from east to west, and north to south. Sister Addie even traveled to Russia on a mission trip, and various other places.
Addie traveled often to Oklahoma to visit her family and friends, but ultimately, she would make Eagle Butte her home. She loved people, she loved the Lord, and she dedicated and committed her life to serving. She was truly a pillar who let her light shine. She served not only in the church that she loved, but in hospitals, in homes, at bedsides, in jails, often visiting with people and sharing the gospel.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at the day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8.
Addie Mae is survived by her loving brothers: Lugene Morris, Ezell Morris, Nathaniel Morris; sister, Gloria Boyd; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her father, Johnny and mother, Fallis; sisters: Jesse, Pearl, Betty, Mary, and Loretta; brothers: Marvin, Joseph, and Samuel Morris; and her dear friend, Pauline McGinty.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Sister Addie’s arrangements.

Cousin Addie your journey has just begun. Life holds many facets, the earth is only one. We will think of you just resting from the sorrows and tears in a place of warmth and comfort. Where there are no days or years. We will think of her living in the hearts of those she touched. For nothing loved is ever lost and she was loved very much. Have a blessed time with the family that is on the journey with you. Love you much.

Rest in peace, give Serena a hug for me. I will see you ladies soon. Thank you for doing so much for people on this reservation. You will be miss. Love from The Christeson Family.
Condolences to her family, friends and brothers and sisters in Christ. She represent the organization with humbleness, kindness and loving spirit. She was a counselor, friend, teacher, and Pastor to many individuals. She never gave up and persevered through many obstacles in her life, taking care of the church property, by mowing, picking up trash, cleaning, and making sure all supplies were available for church members and visitors, donating her time to volunteer. She attended gatherings, made hospital visits, organized many activities and traveled with church members. Memories of her love and compassion for the youth will be remembered also the entire Tribal membership. May she finally sing with the angels, get her crown and mansion that is awaiting in Heaven. She firmly stood for Christian lifestyles and full gospel of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
In addition to her famous Indian tacos, Miss Morris made the best peanut brittle. She sold it at Christmas time at Butler's ( later Dean's) food store She said it was her dad's favorite. It was mine, too. Rest in peace, Sister Addie.
Pastor Sister Addie, was truly a friend, counselor and admirable image of love and endurance with fellowship and compassion. As a humble servant she proclaimed the gospel without shame. Her strong spirit of love and concern for all life on earth will be remembered. Pleasant memories of her years on the reservation and visits to all she was able to personally gather or attend was done without hesitation. Thank you my Sister -In-Christ. May you sing with Angel’s in Heaven and be blessed with your mansion.
When I moved to Eagle Butte, I stayed 3 years. Started going to Addie’s church and never went to another one. I started my close relationship with Jesus there, met a lot of awesome people. I loved visiting with Addie and going places with her. She made the best pies: (anyone know her secret ingredient)🤔 of course she was an awesome cook! I’m so thankful I got to c her last summer and take her to church. We visited and had lunch with her. (Lynette) and I. Wonderful blessed memories. I love you Sister Addie❤️🩹🙏🏽
