Val LaBau
May 20, 1949 ~ July 12, 2011
Val LaBau, 62, of Miller, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at his home.
Private family services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Reck Funeral Home in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating.
Val Clair LaBau was born in Huron, South Dakota to Virgil D. and Mildred C. (Krauter) LaBau on May 20, 1949. He attended grade school in Wessington and Miller. Upon graduation in 1967 from Miller High School, he joined the United States Navy becoming a Seabee and did a tour in Vietnam. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Miller and he operated his own Radiator Shop until a fire forced the closer of the business.
In 1973 he married Sally Jo Anderson. Sally brought to the union five children and they had two sons together, Shannon and Joshua. He later married Janeen Ostern in 2000. She brought one child to this union.
Val was a U.S. Postal mail carrier and also an artillery instructor with the National Guard. After many years of dedication, he retired from both. Val enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping any chance he got. In the winter time, he enjoyed bowling. One of Val’s biggest joys was to take his two sons fishing at the Missouri River and the Black Hills.
Val is survived by one son, Joshua LaBau; two brothers, Doyle and Lyle; two sisters, Virgie and Mona; and one step son, Mark Cundy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janeen; one son, Shannon; one brother, Vernon; maternal grandparents, Elmer and Hazel Krauter and paternal grandparents, Val and Clara LaBau.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Val’s arrangements.

My heartfelt thoughts go out to Val’s family. I always knew him as Blonde, when he worked in the Post Office with my dad C.W. Always enjoyed visiting with him, but it has been many years ago. May you find comfort with your family memories. God Bless Shar

I will miss my buddy
LaBau Family,
We are sorry for your loss. I grew up knowing the LaBau family and Mona and I played together when we were young. My husband worked with Blonde for many years and always enjoyed his company and late night phone calls. Blonde was always friendly and liked to visit. When our kids were young we took them to Blonde’s for trick or treating. He always enjoyed that! Our blessings and prayers go out to you.
