Wayne Sampson, 101, of Highmore, passed away Friday, August 13, 2021 at Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller, SD.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore with Rev. Sara Feld officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Highmore. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2021, followed by a 7:00 p.m., prayer service, all at Sedgwick Lutheran Church, rural Highmore.

Wayne Elwood Sampson was born December 12, 1919, to Svend C. and Ellen A. (Quam) Sampson at home in Illinois township, Hyde County, South Dakota.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church.  He attended the country Sedgwick church all his life and attended school in the south Illinois township school. 

He was united in marriage to Alice Buchheim, January 21, 1942, they had a long and happy seventy-five years together.  To this union, four children were born. 

While a lifetime of farming and ranching, he also helped his neighbors by repairing machinery for them.

Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing baseball with friends on the “North Hyde” ball team.  Wayne served on several boards; church, township, Federal Land Bank, cream station, insurance board, Elevator board (then the elevator burned down), assistant to the Highmore Fire department and a 4-H leader for about fifteen years.  He received awards: Agricultural Stabilization Award for 20 years of service and in 1967 was one of the top producers in Hyde County.  He graded local county roads and cleared the snow for many years.  He taught Sunday School at Sedgwick church and was a 4-H Leader for the Northeast Ranger 4-H for fifteen years.

Survivors include his three children: Gordon (Cynthia) Sampson, Terry (Dana) Sampson, and Gayle (Derek) Burshiem; one daughter-in-law, Jean Sampson; five grandchildren: Amanda Richardson, Trevor Sampson, Wendy Sampson, Joseph Sampson and K.C. Burshiem; eleven great grandchildren: Piper Richardson (Amanda), Hailey Sampson, Peyton and Parker Fyler (Trevor), Kena, Madi, Cash and Beau Sampson (Joe), Keva, Kaden and Kensington Burshiem (K.C.); one great great grandchild, Hunter (Hailey); one sister-in-law, Alice Buchheim and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice Sampson; son, Darwin Sampson; grandson, B.J. Burshiem; three brothers: Silas, Clarence, and Amos; two sisters: Gertrude Kussman and Sadie Cowell; and mother and father-in-law. 

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Wayne's arrangements.

  3. I am so sad as I know that everyone who knew Uncle Wayne is. Fortunately he lived a long and happy life. The Lord is now holding him close. He always had a smile when I saw him. I will always remember a baseball game out by Grandpa's when I was about 7 or 8. Uncle Wayne played center field and I didn't know a man could run so fast. I remember Dad was the catcher. Thank you Lord for letting him be a part of our lives.
