Elda G. Van Bockel was born February 20, 1926 in Leota, MN to Joe and Agnes (Hiemstra) Van Bockel. She was raised near Edgerton, MN until the family moved to Gettysburg in 1926. Elda attended Copp Country School and Gettysburg High School, graduating in 1944.

On June 24, 1945 Elda was united in marriage to Curtis Scheller in Gettysburg. They made their home on the family farm near Seneca. From 1945 to 1946 Elda worked for the selective service. She then took time to raise her family. In 1962 Elda went to work as a clerk with the program assist for the Department of Agriculture.

A large part of Elda’s life was given to the United Methodist Church of both Gettysburg and Seneca. She was very active with the study club and UMW where she served as their treasurer. She was also a member over the years with the REA Club, NARFE, Seneca Legion Auxiliary and served as a trustee on the Seneca Town Board.

Her spare time was spent sewing, doing ceramics, collecting angels, reading, and working in her flowerbeds and garden. She will always be remembered for this quite grace that was upon her and for her protectiveness of all those around her; especially her children and grandchildren.

Elda’s life will be cherished by her children: Joe (Delia) Scheller of Seneca and Joy Scheller of Faulkton; two grandchildren: Brandy Scheller (Jack Hyde) of Mobridge and Derrick Scheller (Heather Jenkins) of Aberdeen; and her four siblings: JoAnn (Everett) Tennant of Seneca, Jetta (Dave) LeDuc of York, NE, Marian Waddell of Faulkton, and Raymond (Georgia) Van Bockel of Gettysburg and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jon and one brother, Vernon.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Elda’s arrangements.

  1. Our sympathy to Elda’s family!

She was a very special cousin to me! She had so much courage for all she has gone through physically and also losing a son and husband.

Now she is in her heavenly home, free from all her earthly cares.

  2. Joy,
My prayers and thoughts are with you in the loss of your mother. I know you will miss her very much, but know the Lord is taking care of her now. Proverbs 3:56 say,”Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not onto thine own understanding. I all thy ways acknowlege Him and He shall direct thy paths.”
