Heaven gained another angel, Joan Hoftiezer, 79, of Miller, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, surrounded by her family.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 9, 2014 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant. Burial followed at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Miller. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 8, 2014 with a 6:30 p.m. rosary service and 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Miller.

Joan was born December 4, 1934 fifteen minutes after her identical twin sister Jean in Ramona, SD to Conrad and Marie (Gruber) Rensch. She went to school and graduated in Ramona. She married the love of her life, Dwaine Hoftiezer on June 16, 1956. They lived in Sioux Falls and moved to Miller in 1960.

Joan was a stay at home mom while her children were being raised. She later worked in the kitchen at the Miller Hospital for 17 years. She was a member of the St. Ann’s Alter society. Joan loved reading, playing cards, playing any board games and listening to Danny O’ Donnell. Joan wouldn’t admit it, but she was very creative and artistic. Her faith was important to her and she said the Rosary daily.

Survivors include her husband, Dwaine of 58 years in Miller; children: Cheryl (Terry) Gaspar of Colton, Cindy (Doug) Symes of Mitchell, Rick (Lisa) Hoftiezer of Luverne, MN, Theresa (Roger) Berg of Sioux Falls, and Ronald (Juli) Hoftiezer, Sr. of Miller; siblings: Georgine Bowlin of Pinole CA, Ken Rensch of Sioux Falls, Ava Penarian of Sacramento CA, Graydon Rensch of Sioux City, IA, Merle Rensch of San Mateo, CA; grandchildren: Holly (Nick) Simon, Austin (Amanda) Gaspar, Aaron Gaspar, Amanda Symes, Gregory Symes, Rachael Berg, Ronald Hoftiezer Jr. and Hiedi Hoftiezer.

Family that has preceded her death are her parents, Conrad and Marie Rensch; sisters: Mary Lois, Maxine, Devota, Phyllis and her twin Jean; and brothers, Conrad Jr. and Carroll.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Joan’s arrangements.

  3. Aunt Joan was a very special lady and I feel blessed to have many memories with her. I will miss her a ton. She has been reunited with many members of our family and will watch over us all. I will remember her as being this year’s Canasta Champion at the Rensch Family Reunion.

  23. Heaven gained another great heart and soul! I know the holy angels have welcomed aunt Joan and have been having the best time giving her the tour! Aunt Joan…a beautiful soul! Aunt Joan…a woman of love and humor and creativity and fun and laughter and faith and loyalty and integrity, my aunt! The best mom, wife, sister, aunt, cousin, grandmother etc. A great lady…my aunt Joan.

  25. Don’t know if you remember me, I am a good friend of Mary’s(Hart). We were best friends in high school and I remember Joan and the kids being at Dick and Jean’s during the summer sometimes when I was there. I am so sorrow for the loss of Joan. She was a great lady!! God Bless and take care!
