Daniel Afraid of Hawk

Daniel Afraid of Hawk, 87, of Cherry Creek, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, Pierre.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. MDT, Friday, April 20, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Cherry Creek, with Fr. Dan Juelfs presiding. Burial followed in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Cherry Creek, with traditional rites by Rocke and John Afraid of Hawk and Chris Brooks. A wake was held at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, April 19, 2018, at Zintkala Hall, Cherry Creek, with a procession at 4:00 p.m. from Daniel’s home. Daniel was taken into Cherry Creek by Tiwahe horse horsebacks.

Daniel Jay Afraid of Hawk was born October 15, 1930 to Richard Afraid of Hawk and Mabel Lone Elk in Rocky Ford, SD. He was the last living patriarch of the Afraid of Hawk Tiospaye.

Daniel is survived by his children: Rocke, Janice, Marlis, Rick and John; 22 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 13 siblings; his beloved wife, Angeline; and one son.

Daniel was the paternal grandson of Afraid of Hawk; maternal grandson of White Mountain; great paternal grandson of Slow Bull; and great maternal grandson of Slow Woman.

Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Daniel’s arrangements.
