Ray was born on October 24, 1923 to George and Ella (Ward) Cuppy in Vayland, S.D., southwest of Miller. When Ray was eight years old, he and his brothers and sisters were separated because of an illness in the family. Ray spent sometime in a foster home in Ree Heights and then was taken to Children’s Home in Sioux Falls. In 1935, at the age of twelve, Ray went to live with the Joe and Maggie Holt family on a farm between Cresbard and Faulkton.

On June 21, 1949, he married Bernice Frasier at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Faulkton. To this union, six girls were born. In 1955, Ray and Bernice purchased a farm in the Norbeck, Wecota area. After an accident took the life of Bernice’s sister and her husband in 1970, their three children came to live with Ray and Bernice. Ray loved farming. He raised cattle and pigs and did custom baling and stack moving. He also worked for the S.D.S.U. Pasture and Research Center for twenty years.

Ray was a hard worker, faithful to his family and church. In 1993, Ray and Bernice moved into Faulkton. Because of his love for farming, he continued to work for local farmers after moving to town and he also enjoyed going to coffee at the co-op with all his buddies.

In January of 2004, Ray entered the Assisted Living Center. It was here where he found his love for birds. He would feed them and sit and watch for hours. After an unfortunate accident in January of 2006, Ray entered the nursing home. Ray always enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids.
