Agnes Leona Haiwick was born May 2, 1918 to Knute and Gunda (Kverneland) Haiwick on the family farm in Washington Township, Hyde County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Edwin Lutheran Church and a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Highmore.
She was raised on what is now the Don Faulstich farm and attended school in Washington Township. In 1937, she married Wilbur Charles Goehring. To this union eight children were born. They farmed and ranched on the Goehring family farm north of Holabird. Wilbur passed away unexpectedly on October 10, 1964. Agnes and family continued to operate the farm. In 1966 she married Ernest (Bud) Hahn. They continued to farm and raised Angus cattle. Bud passed away on January 12, 1993 and she moved into Highmore shortly afterward.
Agnes was a member of Mary Circle and belonged to several community clubs and was a 4-H Leader for several years. Agnes loved farm life and especially mowing hay on her Oliver tractor. Her family was her life and as her children grew older she looked forward to all of them coming back home for holidays and hunting. She was happiest when her house was overflowing with family and friends. Her homemade bread, buns, and pies were her special trademark.
She leaves to mourn her passing her beloved children: two sons, Wilbur, Jr. (Lynette) Goehring, Yankton, SD and Eugene (Roxie) Goehring of Aberdeen, SD; five daughters: Mary (Harold) Hinkle, Holabird, SD; Joan (Kenneth) Hansen, Forest City, IA; Phyllis (Larry) Ehlers, Fridley, MN; Dianne (Harold) Macek, Faulkton, SD; and Bonnie (Larry) Nickelson, Highmore, SD.; a special “adopted” daughter, Virginia (Bert) Caraway, Decatur, TX; and step-children: Cheryl (Mike) Cowan, Highmore, SD and Mike (Merridee) Hahn, Elbert, CO. Her 24 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; brother-in law, Norval (Vera) Goehring, Hitchcock, SD; sister-in-law, Lola Howe, Sioux Falls, SD; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends will miss her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her husbands: Wilbur and Bud; a son, Kenneth (Butch) Goehring; grandson, Anthony (Tony) Goehring; granddaughter, Cameron Cowan; great granddaughter, Kelly Nickelson; her parents; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Agnes’ arrangements.
