Alice Campbell

Alice Campbell, 98, of Miller, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Miller.
Memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, Miller with Rev. Matt Richards officiating. Burial followed at G.A.R. Cemetery in Miller.
Alice was born January 15, 1919 at her family home in Kimball, South Dakota to Kristian and Kristina (Olson) Johnson. She attended school through the 8th grade; later at the age of 50 obtaining her G.E.D. On November 20, 1943, she married Alfred Campbell in Los Angeles, California; honeymooning at Knottsberry Farm. They lived in Los Angeles for one year where Alfred worked as a security guard. They then moved to Ree Heights for a short time before moving on a farm south of Miller, the Paul Robison farm down by the Campbell place, later moving to the Rice farm before moving onto the Coonrod place in Como Township where they lived until Alfred died in 1960. After Alfred’s passing, Alice and their three daughters moved into Miller.
She also worked at the Hand County Memorial Hospital, Rolstad Motel, and did housekeeping for many families. Alice then went to beauty school at the age of 50 and then owned and operated her beauty shop for 37 years before retiring at the age of 87.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and belong to the women’s circle. In her spare time, she was a seamstress for many people in the community, loved cooking, and helping anyone she could.
Her memory will be cherished by her daughter: Lila (Don) Lopata of Renton, Washington and their two children, and five grandchildren; her daughter, Linda Gilliland of Rapid City and her five children and seven grandchildren; and her son-in-law, Roger Bowar of Miller and his six children, 15 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Alfred; daughter, Kay Bowar; grandchildren: Tamara Kay, Roger Mark, and Jason; sons-in-law, Larry Kopplin and Roy Gilliland; two brothers; and nine sisters.
The family would like to say thank you to all of the staff, nurses, and everyone who helped in every capacity at the Good Samaritan Society.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Alice’s arrangements.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family in this time of sorrow. The loss of Alice will be felt by many. She has made many freinds over her time on earth.
After giving birth to our daughter Kelly, Alice is the one we trusted to be Kelly’s first baby-sitter when Patty returned to work. Alice was a kind, loving, caring lady and we send prayers and sympathy to her family.
Aunt Alice used to do Mom’s hair when we were little, it was a weekly trip into town for us farm kids! Hugs to her families.
Great Aunt Alice was a wonderful woman. She was so agreeable, kind and active! The memories are precious of her words and presence among our Campbell family and relatives through the years. May God’s care, peace, and comfort be with Linda and Lila and with Roger and all of your children and their families.

It was so nice to meet Grandma Alice when she came to Washington 5 years ago, when I married her Grandson, Greg. Such a kind spirit, full of life.
To the family of Alice Campbell: She was a very sweet caring woman and she will be missed by all that knew her. May you be comforted by the knowledge that she is now with our Lord and Savior and will be watching over you all and everyone that she knew and cared about. She has gone to be with her husband and other family members and is no longer in pain and she will live on in our memories.
We are sorry we were unable to share in the memorial service for your mom this morning. She was a dear sweet lady and I count it a privilege to have known her. Our sympathy and prayers for your family.
We just heard this afternoon that Aunt Alice was gone. She was a dear lady and loved by so many.
