Alma Heier, 89, of Gettysburg, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the Avera Oahe Manor in Gettysburg.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 26, 2015 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Daniel Tews officiating. Burial followed in the Gettysburg Cemetery. Visitation was hel from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, January 25, 2015, with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.
Alma Emma Bieber was born to Jacob C. and Eva (Perman) Bieber on July 27, 1925 at Java, SD. She was raised on the farm south of Java and baptized at Java Lutheran Church. She attended rural grade school, graduated from Selby High School, and received her teaching certificate at Northern State College in Aberdeen.
On June 10, 1945 she married Alvin Heier and eventually moved to the farm southeast of Gettysburg in Sully County. After Marty and Susan were born, Alma kept busy raising the girls, helping with the farming and ranching, substitute teaching, and eventually began teaching full time in rural schools. In 1979, they moved to Gettysburg where Alma taught 5th grade until her retirement in 1989.
Al and Alma served the Gettysburg community ‘Meals on Wheels’ for several years. They loved to cheer for the Battlers! They enjoyed playing cards and dominoes, square dancing, bowling, and traveling. Shortly after Alvin’s death in 2009, Alma moved to the Logan Apartments where she resided until October of 2014 when she moved into Avera Oahe Manor.
Alma was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Senior Citizens Bowling League, and the Medicine Rock Senior Center. She was also an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Memories of her life will be cherished by her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren: Marty and Mick Bliese of Gettysburg and their children Heidi (Dan) O’Bryan of Colome, Wade (Jenn) Tobin of Spearfish, and Kevin (Kristi) Bliese of Bath; and Susan and Dolan Worth of Gettysburg and their children Bart (Carmen) Worth of Gettysburg, Heather (Mick) Kennedy of Harrisburg, and Mandy (Aaron) Walberg of Aberdeen. Fourteen great grandchildren and one great, great grandson are richer for having shared her life: Kelly and Sara O’Bryan, Cora, Sam, and Josie Tobin, Conner Duven and Bridger Bliese, Preston and Paige Worth, Lexi (Dallas) Hilkemeier and son Cayden, Kaci Kennedy, and Aaron, Russell, and Madelyn Walberg. Also surviving are two sisters: Meta Overgaard of Grafton, WI and Venoye (Duane) Hughes of Sioux Falls; three brothers: Duane (Ginger) Bieber of Omaha, NE, and Jerry Bieber and Kenny (Bonnie) Bieber all of Gettysburg.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters: Martha Heier, Ellora Patterson, and Henrietta Wright; one brother, Rueben Bieber; and one grandchild, Tammy Tobin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Alma’s arrangements.
