Amanda Diane Blue Coat Sand was born September 1, 1957 to Robert Archie and Irene (Hawk Eagle) Blue Coat. She was the third born child of eight. Mandi was born at Old Cheyenne Hospital and was brought home to Green Grass, SD and lived there until they moved to Eagle Butte. In 1976 they then moved to On The Tree along the Moreau River. She graduated from Cheyenne Eagle Butte High School in May of 1976.

As a young woman growing up in Eagle Butte she started working alongside her dad, Archie, at Buzz’s Standard, washing windows and pumping gas. She was able to start an allowance by becoming a janitor for the station. Mandi worked there until Uncle Buzz turned the shop over to Larry Lesmeister. From 1977 to 1979 she worked for the CRST HIP program, from 1979 to 1980 for CRST Property and Supply and CRST WIC program. She also worked at the Legion Club, Cheyenne Lounge, Min Mart and Golden Rule where she made many friends and relatives.

Mandi was raised attending the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in On The Tree. At a young age she learned to sing with the best of them; Uncles Bert and Tim and Lala Sullivan to name a few.

Mandi met the love of her life Paul Sand and married him on November 19, 1992 at the Hughes County Courthouse in Pierre, SD. She loved all of her nieces, nephews and grandchildren as her own. She loved playing mom when she felt she needed to. She also supported them in all their sport activities. She never forgot anyone’s birthday or any special occasion. She always made sure to bake them a cake and host a party.

In 2002 she started having health problems and eventually had to have heart surgery. During this experience she made the decision to commit her life to the Lord. She asked Sister Addie to have bible study and was a hospitable host, always making a delicious supper. Mandi always supported people with prayers and was concerned about all her relatives and prayed for them. She made her peace with God and always wanted her family to have the peace she felt.

Mandi spent time volunteering as a soup kitchen helper, a member of the Daughters of the King, American Legion Auxiliary Post 191 and St. Thomas Episcopal Church at On The Tree.

Mandi’s life will be cherished by her husband: Paul of Eagle Butte; Hunka Mother: Marge Blue Coat; brothers: Lanny LaPlante Sr, Orville (Barbara) LaPlante, Ira (Jennifer) Blue Coat all of Eagle Butte, Phillip “Junior” Blue Coat of White Horse and Richard Red Elk of Eagle Butte; sisters: Fay Rousseau of White Horse, Carrie (Melvin) Young Bear, Carla Blue Coat, Ina (Pierre) Traversie all of Eagle Butte and Reba (Thomas Sr.) Three Legs of On The Tree; uncles: Joe Milo and Norman (Regina) Blue Coat; aunts: Carol Ann Thompson, Rose Bad Hand, and Cora Mae Marshall; nieces and nephews: Elliot, Ryan, Wyatt (Monica), Ashley, and Victoria Blue Coat, Jarred (Carla Joe) Blue Coat, Kirby (Robby) Woods, Gary “Beaver” Mound, Kelsey and Martin Montreal, Jimmi Guerrero, Neil Blue Coat, Frank Blue Coat, Thomas Three Legs Jr., Peyton, Chauncey, Bennett, Ashley, Amber and Severt Red Elk, Donnie, Rhonda and Stuart Swan, Lisa, JR, Larry and Debbie Rousseau, Elaine Little Bear, Danny, Kelly, Doug, Lanny Jr LaPlante and Sherrie Red Elk, Emma, Abby and Jacob LaPlante.
