Anthony J. Frost, 87, of Gettysburg, passed away, Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg with Fr. Jerry Kopel officiating. Burial followed at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery, Hoven with military rites. A wake service was held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the church.
Anthony “Tony” Frost was born September 19, 1924 on the Stuwe Farm North of Hoven, SD to Frank M. and Margaret (Bovy) Frost. He lived his entire life in the Hoven area where he attended school and worked for various famers prior to enlisting with the United States Air Force in 1946. While in the service he attended mechanic school for aeronautics in Belzoni, MS. He worked after graduation for Langers Field where he received his honorable discharge in 1948.
On June 21, 1949 Tony married Alice Miles in Hoven, SD and to this union ten children were born: five sons and five daughters. Alice passed away in 1975. Tony worked for his dad in the mechanic business until purchasing it in 1955. He sold Minneapolis - Moline, New Holland and Short Line. In 1975 he went to work for the Hoven High School as a custodian for the next 20 years, retiring in 1995. He was also a custodian for the Hoven American Legion Hall from 1979 until 1997.
Tony married Berniece (Umiker) Baum at Lebanon on July 11, 1980. They made their home in Hoven until August 2004 when Tony suffered a stroke. They then moved to Gettysburg where Berniece cared for him in their home until he entered the Oahe Manor in July 2005. Berniece passed away January 2007.
Tony was a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hoven, St. Anthony’s Knights of Columbus, Hoven American Legion holding various offices and the S.D. Custodial Association serving as secretary for many years.
Tony enjoyed his time with family, friends, his cat Myrtle, his cockatiel “Spike” and his Parrot Frebee. He also loved bird watching, attending races, playing cards and bingo.
His life will be cherished by his children: James (Terese) of Highmore, Virgil (Cindy) of Martinsburg, PA, Colleen of Pierre, Maxine (Gary) Urban of Presho, Lila Rivera of Pierre, Maureen of Pierre, Richard of Billings, MT, Rita (Dave) Kohl of Erlanger, KT and Paul (Tammy) of Mitchell; step daughters: Aleta (Phil) Goebel of Gettysburg, Darlene (Dave) Niederberger of Bremerton, WA and Linda (Doug) Ekberg of Hammill, SD; 13 grandchildren; six step grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 10 step great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and special family friend, Paulette LaRosh of Gettysburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Alice and Berniece; his sisters, Margaret and Theresa; son, Victor; brothers: Lawrence, Vincent, William and Clarence; stepson, Alfred Baum Jr. and step grandson, Dr. Bill Baum.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Tony’s arrangements.
