Archie was born on July 26, 1932 to Leonard Le Beau and Elsie (Swiftbird) Garreau at Moreau River, where as a young boy he lived with his grandparents, Walter and Annie (LeCompte) Swiftbird. He attended school at Moreau River country school, Old Cheyenne Agency and Stephan Boarding School where he participated in basketball and boxing.
He spent his teenage years in Rapid City, Igloo and California with his mother, Elsie. In 1950, he married Norma Mills and from this union had eight children: Carla, Kathy, Greg, Lori, Thomas (Frenchy), Tisha, Shane and Kenneth. Archie and family lived in the Black Hills area for many years before settling in Eagle Butte, SD.
In his adult years Archie worked as a certified mechanic, rancher, construction worker, Boy Scout recruiter, housing and building inspector and retired as Office Manager from Moreau Grand Electric, Eagle Butte, in 1994, at the age of 62.
He married Jennie Shaving in 1982, and with this marriage came Mark, Randy and Kim. He also has a son, Tim Minton, who resides in Bluff City, Tennessee.
Archie loved music, playing guitar with his family and friends. He enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s sports events. He was a supporter of the annual International Sundance of Green Grass, SD and a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. His favorite hymn was Lakota Hymn 75.
Archie enjoyed cooking for his family and is fondly remembered for his bountiful breakfasts. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was an avid CNN viewer and loved to debate current events with his family. In his later years of life, Archie developed serious health problems and always encouraged his family and friends to take care of themselves and live healthy lifestyles. He often expressed to his wife, Jenny, his hopes and dreams for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that they work hard so that they would be good providers for their families and not to forget their spiritual needs.
He is survived by his wife, Jenny; eleven children, Carla of Hot Springs, Kathy of Alaska, Greg (Charlotte) of Eagle Butte, Lori (Uwe) Stengl of Eagle Butte, Thomas (Carrie) of California, Tisha (Steve) Moran of Bear Creek, Shane of Eagle Butte, Tim (Rene) Minton of Tennessee, Mark (Darla) Shaving of Eagle Butte, Randy Swimmer and Kim Swimmer both of Eagle Butte; 43 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren, his sister, Alta (Pete) Shelton of Black Hawk and his brother, Bobby Kruse of California.
Archie was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Elsie; his stepfather, Alex Garreau; his son, Kenneth and his sisters, Wanda and Rita Le Beau.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the following for all their caring support and healthcare assistance over the last several years: West Winds Nursing Staff, especially Susan Berndt; Blaine O’Leary of Medical Beaks Medical Supply; Dr. Raymond and Black Hills Dialysis Staff; Eagle Butte EMS; Dr. Spore and Eagle Butte ER Staff; IHS Optometry (Jackie); Moreau Grand Electric and Black Hills Electric FCU and numerous family and friends who were always ready to offer their assistance.
