Arnold Eddy Rittel was born in Eagle Township to Elizabeth (Bitterman) and John Rittel on February 27, 1927.  Arnie shares that date with his great grandmother and Aunt Nettie.  Arnie was the youngest of five children.  He grew up on a farm south of Highmore and attended school in Eagle Township and later attended Highmore High School. After high school, Arnie farmed and ranched with his parents south of Highmore.

Arnie met the love of his life, Ethel Mae, at a dance in Blunt, SD.  Arnie and Ethel’s unforgettable day was October 9, 1955 in Onida, SD.  In 1964, Arnie and Ethel moved to their farm southwest of Highmore.  They were only going to stay one year and now here it is 2014.  They raised four beautiful children, Ronnette, Renee, Randy, and Ryan.

Arnie loved to work on the farm.  Even when his health was failing he was always tinkering with his tractors, checking the cows or mowing the hay.  Arnie preferred to raise Hereford cattle.  Some of Arnie’s favorite things to do were the trips with his family to the Black Hills, playing cards, fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandkids.  His smile and bright blue eyes would light up any room.

Blessed to have shared in his life are his wife of 57 years, Ethel of Highmore; twin daughters: Ronnette (Jim) Coe of St. Peters, MO and Renee Pavlik of Mount Dora, FL; sons: Randy Rittel of Huron and Ryan (Kris) Rittel of Highmore; grandchildren: Josh, Tyler, Kaitlyn, Austin, Reis, Dakota, and Colby; sister-in-laws: Edna Foth and Dorothy Schmitgen of Harrold, Marie Schmitgen of Pierre, and Marlene Rittel of Yankton; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding him in death are his parents; two sisters; and two brothers.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Arnold’s arrangements.
