Avis Iversen, 90, of Gettysburg, passed away Monday, October 27, 2014 at St. John’s in Kearney, NE. 

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Daniel Tews officiating. Burial was held at 12:00 p.m. MST, Monday, November 3, 2014 at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis. Visitation was held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 1, 2014 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.

Avis Iversen was born on October 8, 1924 to Senor and Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Warn) Stockstad at home near Gorman, SD. She attended a one room schoolhouse and graduated from Onida High School.

After graduation she went to electronics school in Omaha, NE and Oakland, CA. Avis worked for United Airlines from 1942-1946 in North Platte, NE, Toledo, OH and Cleveland, OH. In Cleveland she enjoyed front row seats at the World Series. She also took in the sights in the other states she worked and really enjoyed her life. In 1946 Avis returned home to help her family when her mother became ill and passed away.

In 1948 she married Clarence Iversen and lived on a farm. They had five children (three girls & two boys) and remained married for 64 ½ years. She had 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Her family was always a priority in her life.

Avis and Clarence enjoyed an anniversary in Washington, DC and Virginia visiting a daughter. Over the years they also visited other children in Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Maryland, South Carolina, Nevada, Germany, Italy, Austria and France. An anniversary trip to Hawaii was also a highlight.

Avis was a lifetime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she participated in LWML, choir, the quilting group and weekly Bible study. She was a charter member of the Medicine Rock Cowbelles, the VFW and the M & M Extension Club. She also was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, participating in the Honor Guard to pay tribute to members who passed away and was Legionette of the year in 2005. For years she enjoyed working at the Mini Mall, cooking, helping with 4-H and gardening. She was a hard working woman with a strong faith and was a great example to her family.

Avis’ life will be cherished by her children: Peggy (Dave) Frost of Kearney, NE, Patty (Charles) Pathmann of Winona, MN, Lori Smith of Las Vegas, NV, Robert Iversen of Ft. Pierre and James Iversen of Gettysburg; her grandchildren: Angie (Jeff) Nachtigal, Heidi (Tommy) Mausbach, Trevor Pathmann (Karla), Heather (Nick) Sutko, Jodi Pathmann (Mike), Ashley Smith, Courtney (Rick) White, Amanda (Alex) Coyle, Michaela Frost (Dusty), Austin Iversen (Gabby) and Dalton Fuerst; great grandchildren: Ali, Kate, and Abby Nachtigal, Lilly, Lucy and Ruby Mausbach, Grant, Hadley, & Reed Sutko, and Christian and Braxton White; and one sister: Norma (Darrell) Harer of Hoven; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence; her parents; and siblings: Dwight and Ralph.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Avis’ arrangements.

  5. To the Iverson family: I remember your mom so well. Mom (LaVere Huber) always said such nice things about her. I remember the last time I visited her was when Mom and I went to a craft fair at the church in Gettysburg. She was so kind. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. It is always difficult to lose one of your parents. Cherish your memories and feel God’s arms around you to help you with your grief. Cyndy

I pray that you rest in peace with Clarence and know that you will be remembered and thought of often. May God bless you and your famimly in this time of such sorrow.
