She began her education at the age of 4 in Beth Eden rural school, and graduated from Harrold High School in 1939. She attended Notre Dame Junior College in Mitchell, South Dakota, where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught in Hughes and Sully county rural schools until her marriage to Alfred Berrien on October 3, 1949 in the rectory of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Highmore, SD. She took a very active role in her children’s education and even learned to like high school sports. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Harrold, South Dakota., and was active in Altar Society and many other church functions. Her love of God and devotion to the Catholic Church sustained her throughout her life.
