August 31, 1950 ~ December 14, 2013

Barbara Roseland, 63, of Seneca, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 19, 2013 at the United Methodist Church of Faulkton with Rev. Bill Hoffman officiating. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday December 18, 2013 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.

Barbara Alyce Logan was born August 31, 1950 to John Wilton and Isabel Carmen (Voiles) Logan in Cando, ND.  She was the second of five children born to John and Isabel. She was baby sister to Jane and would later become big sister to brother Jack and sisters Carmen and Joy.  After graduating from Devil’s Lake High School, she attended both Lake Region Junior College in Devils Lake and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND.  While a student at UND, Barbara was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.  Despite this discouragement, she returned to UND and worked her way through school earning her Bachelor's degree in English at UND.

While at UND, she fell in love with Sociology student Bruce Roseland.  Upon her graduation, Barbara taught high school English in Esmond, ND.  On May 26, 1979, Barbara and Bruce were married at the First United Methodist Church in Devils Lake.  Shortly after their wedding, they moved to Bruce's ranch home outside of Seneca and Barbara secured a job at Highmore High School teaching English, German, and Speech. She also coached Oral Interpretation and the One-Act and Three-Act plays.  She taught there from 1980 through 1994.

Barbara and Bruce were blessed with two sons, Aaron and Adam, and they both were the apple of her eye.

Barbara was a people-person and enjoyed any opportunity to visit with friends and family.  She was loyal, positive and encouraging to many.  She loved many types of music and enjoyed singing and harmonizing.  She was a member of the United Methodist Church and contributed by teaching Sunday school and participating in church activities.

When Bruce started writing poetry, Barbara enthusiastically supported and encouraged him by proofreading his work and contacting potential publishers.  As his literary work became more recognized, she enjoyed accompanying him to poetry readings and book-signings.  Throughout her life, from high school, to college, to teaching, to church, to meeting her son’s friends, to the various South Dakota Poetry Society gatherings, everyone Barb met was effected and infected with her relentless positivity and overwhelming kindness.

Barbara is survived by her loving family; her husband of 34 years, Bruce; children Aaron Roseland of Hettinger, ND and Adam Roseland of Pierre, SD; sisters Jane Kamara of Fargo, ND, Carmen Votaw of Austin, TX and Joy Logan of Columbia, SC; brother Jack of Canyon Creek, MT; sisters-in-law Jane Roseland of Rapid City, SD and Kay Roseland of Minneapolis, MN and several nieces and nephews.

She was greeted in heaven by her parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law, and many family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests a donation be made to the National MS Society.  A memorial fund has been created in her name under Barbara Roseland Memorial Fund.

Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Barbara’s arrangements.

  14. A student always remembers the kind, caring, and encouraging teachers and Mrs. Roseland was one of them . Mrs Roseland was a favorite teacher to many Highmore students. I am saddened to read this. The world lost a great English teacher.

  15. As a student of Mrs. Roseland, I can tell you she tried to do the impossible. Teach me German!! I will never forget her as a teacher, a mentor, but mostly as a friend. I consider myself very fortunate to have known her and all she offered to me as a student. You will be sorely missed Mrs. Roseland. You were one of a kind. Rest in peace.

  16. Barb was the essence of humility, always putting others first and never showing impatience. Her smile, her gentle insistence that something be done, produced so much good, so much growth in the SD poetry community that no one could have a greater impact. She will be missed, but not forgotten.

  21. Barb and I went to school together in high school and went to the same church. She was always such a caring, positive friend having so much determination and patience. The many fun memories I will cherish forever. I will keep your family in my prayers.

  23. My heart goes out to all three of you men. Thoughts and prayers in this time of sorrow. I know Barb will be watching over you all and everyone else that she encountered throughout her life. Though know that I am thinking about you guys always. I am always here for you guys. Aaron I know that you are just taking Hettinger, ND by storm with your great big heart and out smarting wits. Bruce, your inspiration to all, yes my two boys will be wearing red and black but remember they still have that influence from the black and gold. Adam, your kind heart is just an amazing thing you have. Barb had asked my mom when she was in the nursing home if I ever came to visit my grandmother, so the next visit I came and had a fun conversation with her. I will miss those sparkling eyes of hers when she seen my boys and I and how happy we were and I know she is still watching over everyone that she knew. Yes, that may be a long list but not how she thought about any of it.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you three men, I will be thinking of you all and everyone else that is impacted by this.
    Love Always, Jennifer Bohn

  28. Julie sent me a copy of the booklet made for Barb. It is beautiful. I will think of her when I see “a diamond glint on the snow”. I did not know Barb for very long, but it was long enough to know that she was a beautiful, kind, and gracious woman. You were so lucky to have her in your life, even if the time was too short.

  29. My sincere condolences to you and your family. Revelation 21:4 make this promise, it says: ” And he (God) will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither will morning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” What a beautiful promise, we all look forward, from our loving Creator, (Jehovah God, Psalm 83:18). May the God of peace be with you and your family.

    Sincerely Yours,
    Brandy Molina
